Cillian Murphy and director Tim Mielants, who collaborated on the acclaimed 2024 film *Small Things Like These*, are working together again on a new, deeply moving project called *Steve*.
Based on Max Porter’s novel *Shy*, the film recently premiered in UK cinemas and will soon be available on Netflix.
The film features Rhys Darby as Steve, a stressed-out principal running a school for troubled boys. It’s been well-received by critics, including a four-star rating from us.
I was fascinated to learn that Murphy didn’t just act in the film, but also produced it! He actually convinced the director, Mielants, to try a really unique way of making the movie. I just finished reading an exclusive interview with Mielants where he talks all about it, and I’m excited to share everything I know about how and where you can watch it too.
Steve UK release date – Is it streaming?
Steve premiered in early September at TIFF and had a short run in UK cinemas starting September 19th. For those who missed it in theaters, it will be available on Netflix starting October 3rd.
Netflix will be the exclusive streaming home for the film, releasing it globally. Before it’s available on Netflix, the only way to see it will be in theaters.

Steve plot – What is it about?

Steve makes a few changes to Porter’s original story. The book, called *Shy*, is about a sixteen-year-old boy named Shy who attends a reform school – a boarding school for students who have gotten into trouble.
The movie focuses on Steve, a school principal, and a particularly important day in his life. Taking place in England during the mid-1990s, the story shows Steve battling to save his school and protect his own mental health.
Readers who loved the book can rest easy – the movie still focuses on Shy and his journey to overcome personal challenges.
