As a huge fan, I was really interested to hear what the Duffer Brothers had to say about how to best watch the new season! Apparently, Ross Duffer is encouraging everyone to turn off all the fancy picture settings on their TVs. He wants us to ditch those ‘garbage’ enhancements – even on those massive 8K screens – and just watch the show the way it was originally made to be seen. It’s cool that they care so much about how we experience their work!
Before the first part of Stranger Things 5 comes out, one of the show’s creators shared a tip for fans about how to best enjoy the new season. Surprisingly, he advised against using the picture-enhancing settings found on many modern TVs.
“A little PSA before you watch tonight. I want to make sure that your TVs are set up properly.”
In the video, Duffer recommends disabling all picture enhancements—things like super-resolution, dynamic contrast, and color filters—and especially settings called truemotion or smoothmotion, which he says cause a distracting, unrealistic look often called the “soap opera effect.” He went on to explain:
No matter what, avoid using the ‘vivid’ setting. It drastically worsens the picture quality and doesn’t reflect how the movie was meant to look.
‘Stranger Things 5’ Is Pleasing Fans…However They Watched It
The anticipation for Stranger Things 5 is incredibly high, reminiscent of the buzz around Season 8 of Game of Thrones – and we remember how that ended. Luckily, Stranger Things has so far avoided similar pitfalls, earning its best audience reviews since its first season. While there’s still a lot of season left to unfold, the show has done an excellent job of setting the stage for one last, epic adventure in Hawkins.
The fifth season of Stranger Things is off to a strong start, earning a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, this score comes from the most enthusiastic fans who watched all the episodes immediately upon release. The true measure of its success will come as more people watch at their own pace. Ultimately, Part 2 in December and the final episodes on New Year’s Eve will determine whether Stranger Things finishes strong or falters like many shows do at the end of their run.
The first part of Stranger Things Season 5, with four episodes, is now streaming on Netflix. Part 2 will be released on Christmas Day, and the very last episodes will be available on Netflix and in select cinemas at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on New Year’s Eve.
