How to watch the I Know What You Did Last Summer films in order

As a film aficionado, this summer presents an exhilarating opportunity to immerse myself once more in one of the iconic teen horror series from the late ’90s – “I Know What You Did Last Summer“.

Over two decades, spanning from the initial success in 1997 to its anticipated follow-up in 2025, this franchise has etched a persistent impact (like the Fisherman’s hook) with its masked assassins, enigmatic coastal mysteries, and a multitude of shocking plot twists drenched in blood.

Throughout its journey, it has produced three movies, a streaming revival, and now an eagerly awaited reunion of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr in cinemas, as they navigate the lethal aftermath of a single terrible choice, while introducing a fresh group of teenagers facing similar perils.

If you’re new to it or just want a reminder, here’s a guide on how to catch up with the entire I Know What You Did Last Summer series from its beginning.

I Know What You Did Last Summer movies in order

1. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Released: 1997

The movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” directed by Jim Gillespie, kickstarted the franchise. This film tells the story of four friends who unintentionally strike a man with their car and promise to conceal the incident. However, in the following year, they are pursued by a murderer armed with a hook, suggesting that he is aware of their dark secret.

The movie, starring a youthful ensemble consisting of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe, gained fame as a classic teen slasher film that significantly shaped the horror genre in the late ’90s.

Where to watch: Available to buy or rent via Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

2. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

Released: 1998

Under the guidance of director Danny Cannon, the follow-up finds Julie James (Hewitt) continuing to grapple with the chilling incidents of the past summer. A tranquil getaway in the Bahamas appears to be a much-needed respite; however, the murders resume once more…

The upcoming sequel intensifies the suspense by introducing characters such as Brandy and Mekhi Phifer, while delving into the enigmatic background of the Fisherman murderer’s origins.

Where to watch: Available to buy or rent via Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

3. I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer

Released: 2006

As a passionate film aficionado, I’d like to share my thoughts on an underrated direct-to-video sequel that marked its spot as the third instalment in the series. This time around, the story unfolds in a fresh setting with a brand-new ensemble cast. Brooke Nevin steps into the role of Amber, David Paetkau becomes Colby Patterson, and Torrey DeVitto takes on the character of Zoe.

The narrative takes an intriguing turn when a gang of teenagers attempts to hide the grim consequences of a disastrous 4th of July prank gone wrong. However, it’s not long before the familiar perils resurface, once again putting our characters in grave danger.

Although it doesn’t continue the story of the original characters, it returns to the horror genre’s traditional “slasher” elements. However, it is often viewed as a separate entity within the franchise.

Where to watch: Available to buy or rent via Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

4. I Know What You Did Last Summer (TV series)

Released: 2021

This Amazon Prime Video series offers a fresh take on the initial concept, catering to today’s audience. The story unfolds in the beautiful backdrop of Hawaii, focusing on a group of youngsters who are tormented by a deadly secret from their graduation night. A year after this fateful event, someone starts eliminating them one by one.

Rather than sticking to a single, tense 100-minute movie plot, the series unfolds the storyline over eight episodes, providing more scope for developing characters. Additionally, the show adopts a contemporary style that resonates with Generation Z audiences, incorporating topics such as social media, sexuality, and identity into its broader themes.

As a devoted viewer, let me share that I’m thrilled about the ensemble of this show! I get to see Madison Iseman bring Lennon to life, Brianne Tju embody Margot, Ezekiel Goodman play Dylan, Ashley Moore portray Riley, and Sebastian Amoruso take on the role of Johnny. Each actor adds a unique charm to their characters, making this production a must-watch!

Where to watch: Streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

5. I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025)

Five friends unintentionally become involved in a lethal car crash and conceal their actions to keep the secret hidden (once more). A year passes, but the past resurfaces as they discover someone has knowledge of their previous summer’s misdeeds (repeatedly). Pursued by a fresh slasher reminiscent of the Fisherman, they urgently turn to two individuals who survived the 1997 Southport massacre for aid.

In the movie “Do Revenge,” directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the principal roles are played by Madelyn Cline as Danica, Chase Sui Wonders as Ava, Jonah Hauer-King as Milo, and Tyriq Withers as Teddy. Additionally, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell, Gabbriette Bechtel, and Austin Nichols complete the cast.

Upon her return to the series, Hewitt shared with ScreenRant that her condition for reviving Julia was that the character had not moved past the trauma from 1997. This traumatic event significantly influenced Hewitt’s portrayal as she felt strongly about delving deeper into this aspect of the character.

In addition, I believe Julia portrays someone who has been mourning for 27 years over the girl who was involved in the accident she witnessed all those years ago. This aspect was crucial to her character in the film, and I’m glad we managed to convey it effectively in such a brief period of time. Overall, I found this portrayal quite satisfying.
