For the second year in a row, a Brazilian film has been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. This year, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent” joins last year’s nominee, “I’m Still Here,” as one of the ten films competing for the prestigious award.
Similar to a previous movie, The Secret Agent is set in 1970s Brazil during the time of the military dictatorship. Wagner Moura, known from Narcos and Civil War, plays a professor forced to go on the run after becoming caught up in the country’s political unrest.
The film received nominations for Best Picture and Best International Film, as expected. It’s also been nominated for two more Oscars: Best Casting – a brand new award – and Best Actor for Wagner Moura.
While actors like Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio are also strong contenders, Moura is expected to receive significant support from fans who have been highly impressed with the film.

How to watch The Secret Agent in the UK
The Secret Agent is not yet available to watch in the UK – but there’s not too long to wait.
The movie comes out in theaters starting February 20th. With its recent Oscar nomination, it should be playing in many cinemas nationwide – it’s always best to confirm showtimes with your local theater.
The film is now being released in the UK nine months after its successful premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. At the festival, Wagner Moura won Best Actor and Kleber Mendonça Filho was recognized as Best Director, and critical acclaim for the movie has continued to grow since then.
Mubi will be streaming the film in the UK, but we don’t have a release date for home viewing yet. We’ll update this page as soon as we know when it will be available.
What is The Secret Agent about?
This film takes place in 1970s Brazil, during the time of the country’s military dictatorship. It’s a powerful story about fighting back against oppression and the difficult choices people make when faced with corruption, highlighting the struggle between doing what’s right and navigating a dishonest political system.
Okay, so the basic setup of this film is pretty simple: a professor journeys from São Paulo to Recife during the vibrant, chaotic energy of Carnival. He’s on a mission to reconnect with his son. It’s a potentially rich premise, setting a father-son story against the backdrop of one of Brazil’s biggest celebrations – I’m immediately intrigued to see how that contrast plays out.
He quickly discovers he’s being watched by his neighbours at his new hiding place, and realizes there’s no way to escape the reach of the corruption that’s following him.
