Katherine Parkinson has stated that she doesn’t intend to engage in the intense debate surrounding the transgender community, after announcing her participation in the upcoming Harry Potter series streaming on the American platform Max.
So far, the significant new project has elicited a variety of responses, partially because it’s linked to author J.K. Rowling, who has encountered criticism in certain circles concerning her opinions on transgender rights.
Back in June, I was thrilled to learn that Emma Thompson, not Julie Walters this time, would be stepping into the magical world of Harry Potter as Molly Weasley, Ron’s mom, in the upcoming series. This exciting development is a fresh take on J.K. Rowling’s original books, further expanding the enchanting universe we all know and love.
The actor gained popularity from his role in The IT Crowd, a sitcom produced by Graham Linehan, who is also known for speaking up about transgender matters. At present, he can be seen in BBC One’s beloved series Here We Go and the critically-acclaimed Disney Plus original, Rivals, which is adapted from Dame Jilly Cooper’s novel.
She added: “Given my strong preference for working as minimally as I can – a longstanding one – I won’t be indispensable for it.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Parkinson mentioned an exciting proximity for her work. Since the Harry Potter series is being filmed at Warner Bros Studios in Leavesden, Watford, she won’t find herself “far off” from the shooting locations of her other ongoing projects, making it more convenient for her creative journey!
“I’m hoping I’ll be very free to do whatever I want,” she concluded.
In 2020, J.K. Rowling shared an extensive viewpoint regarding discussions about sex and gender, which drew criticism and controversy from organizations like Stonewall within the LGBTQ+ community.
J.K. Rowling has expressed her opinions publicly as well, such as in a 2024 social media post on platform X, where she stated firmly that there are no children who identify as transgender, and she voiced her disagreement with the belief that a child might be born with a body that doesn’t align with their true gender identity.
In May 2025, JK Rowling established the JK Rowling Women’s Fund, a resource that provides legal aid for individuals and organizations who advocate for preserving women’s rights based on their biological sex.
The performers who played Harry Potter characters, such as Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, have publicly spoken out against J.K. Rowling’s opinions and have expressed their support for the transgender community instead.
Besides Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent, have come forward in support of the author, addressing the criticisms leveled against them.

Simultaneously, Paapa Essiedu, set to portray Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter remake, was among numerous film and TV industry professionals who endorsed an open letter advocating for transgender rights, following the UK Supreme Court’s decision that defines a woman based on biological sex.
Responding to rumors about his job security in the new adaptation due to differing opinions with the author, Rowling clarified to her followers on X: “I don’t possess the authority to fire an actor from the series, and even if I did, I wouldn’t use it.
I’m against the idea of depriving individuals of their employment or means of living, just because their lawfully protected viewpoints diverge from my own.
