A huge open-world RPG is coming out in just two months, and it’s set to be twice as large as Skyrim and bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2. However, size isn’t everything. A large open world needs more than just space – it needs depth and a sense of life. If it’s just vast but empty, it won’t be enjoyable, and the problems will actually be worse. But if done right, a truly massive and immersive open world could be amazing.
Crimson Desert, the highly anticipated game from South Korean studio Pearl Abyss, launches on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X on March 19, 2026. While some RPG fans might see it as a blend of action and adventure rather than a classic RPG – and they’d have a point – many modern RPGs fall into that same category. Regardless of how you define it, excitement for the game is building.
Twice the Size of Skyrim
A developer from Pearl Abyss recently mentioned the game’s massive size in an interview. They said it’s larger than the map in Red Dead Redemption 2 and even bigger – twice the size, in fact – than Skyrim, which is still known as one of the largest open-world games ever made.
The developer explained that the game world is massive, exceeding the size of both Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption 2. They stated that it’s at least twice as large as Skyrim’s playable area, and bigger overall than the map in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Honestly, one of the coolest things about Crimson Desert is the ability to fly around on dragons! It just adds this whole other level to the game, something you didn’t see in the other titles I’ve been checking out. It really makes the world feel massive.
It’s still uncertain if Pearl Abyss can deliver on the game’s massive scope. While early gameplay footage shows a wealth of content, assets, and systems, some of it appears a bit superficial. It’s also unclear whether the story and characters will be compelling enough to motivate players to explore the expansive open world. Despite these concerns, there’s currently a lot of buzz and anticipation surrounding the game and its potential.
