A new Star Wars film is on the way! It’s been a while since The Rise of Skywalker came out in 2019 – the franchise has been primarily releasing shows on Disney+ like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew. But that’s about to change. This year, we’ll see The Mandalorian and Grogu in theaters, continuing the story from the Disney+ series. And in 2027, Shawn Levy will direct Ryan Gosling in a new film called Star Wars: Starfighter.
Rumors suggested Daisy Ridley might reprise her role as Rey in a future film, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. Screenwriter Jonathan Tropper recently discussed his new comedy, The Wrecking Crew, with ScreenRant. During the interview, he was asked about Star Wars: Starfighter and explained that he and Levy created a fresh story, free from the constraints of previous installments.
This also allowed the creators to avoid relying on characters from previous films. According to Tropper, “We’re intentionally not bringing back any familiar faces. You won’t see characters you recognize from the other movies.” While they’re keeping certain classic Star Wars elements, he couldn’t share any further details.
What Will Happen With The Star Wars Legacy Characters?

It seems Star Wars: Starfighter will tell a brand new story, completely separate from any previous Star Wars films or Disney+ series, and won’t feature any returning characters. This is a first for the franchise since the original movie. So far, Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth are confirmed as the main actors.
Another possibility is that Tropper is deliberately misleading people to maintain secrecy around the casting. Disney is very protective of its movie plans and often requires actors to sign strict confidentiality agreements. Marvel, in particular, has a history of asking actors to deny or hide upcoming storylines. It’s possible Tropper is following those same instructions, and we won’t know the truth until the film is released in 2027.
With Kathleen Kennedy no longer leading the way, Star Wars has new leadership. Several movies are currently being developed, including a film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chiny based on The New Jedi Order and James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi. However, since both projects were in development under Kennedy, their future isn’t certain. Now that Dave Filoni is in charge of Star Wars creative, things are open to change, and no plans are final.
