The new movie Song Sung Blue, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as a Neil Diamond tribute band, has won over audiences and received positive reviews for being both inspiring and emotional. However, the film’s depiction of Mike Sardina’s life is being disputed by those who knew him, including his son, who claims the movie is entirely fabricated.
Michael Sardina Jr. expressed his disappointment to the Daily Mail, stating his father would be upset with how the movie Song Sung Blue, directed by Craig Brewer, portrayed their family. He claims he was intentionally left out of the film. According to Sardina Jr.:
Everyone raves about how moving that movie is, but it’s completely fabricated. It unfairly takes credit for all the dedication and effort my father invested throughout his life.
Although Mike Sardina had a son, Mike Jr., with his second wife, Diane Annunziata, he wasn’t included as a character in the movie Song Sung Blue. However, he did receive $30,000 for acting as a “consultant” on the film. Mike Jr.’s sister, Angelina, and their stepmother Claire’s children from a previous relationship were portrayed in the movie. Mike Jr. publicly criticized Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, calling them “monsters” for not acknowledging him during interviews promoting the film.
It’s frustrating that every time those people appear on TV, they completely ignore me. I was a huge part of my father’s life, even when I wasn’t living in Wisconsin, as I’m his only son. They never even bothered to reach out or ask for more details – they could have easily spoken to Craig Brewer.
According to text messages sent in October, the director, Craig Brewer, seemed to understand Mike Sardina Jr.’s disappointment after Mike Jr. and his sister watched the film. Brewer reportedly said there were many true details he hadn’t included and suggested Mike Jr.’s concerns stemmed from not being directly involved in the filmmaking process.
According to Mike Sardina’s son, they are potentially planning to sue Davis Entertainment, Focus Features, and NBCUniversal, and he shared this information with a tabloid.
They utterly ruined everything my father spent his life building – his life’s work and reputation. I need the real story to be told honestly and respectfully, and I want those responsible to be held accountable.
Mike Sardina Jr. believes the film Song Sung Blue doesn’t fully represent his father’s path to recovery and omits difficult truths about their upbringing. He describes their home as “extremely violent,” marked by drug use and a strained relationship with his stepbrother. His sister agrees, stating that while the movie accurately depicts the love between their father and Claire, it doesn’t provide a true picture of their family life.
While the story is lovely and inspiring, it’s simply not accurate. That’s what’s really bothering me – it’s a false portrayal of what actually happened.
Their stepmother, Claire Sardina, known as “Thunder” in the film, has been a strong supporter of Song Sung Blue. She’s attended movie premieres with Kate Hudson and the rest of the cast, and even sang “Sweet Caroline” with Hugh Jackman at an event in Milwaukee. Kate Hudson received a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Thunder, which Hugh Jackman celebrated even though he wasn’t nominated himself.
