Hugh Jackman received an Oscar nomination for his role in Les Misérables (2012), but he’s widely known by comic book fans as Wolverine from the X-Men movies. Wolverine recently returned to the big screen in the 2024 Marvel hit, teaming up with Deadpool, and it seems Jackman might not be finished playing the character just yet.
Hugh Jackman recently spoke with Cynthia Erivo, the star of Wicked: For Good. They discussed Jackman’s plans for the future of his role as Wolverine.
Jackman said it didn’t feel like a final goodbye. He explained that it did feel like the end after making Logan – the 2017 film directed by James Mangold. He emphasized that he needed to consider that movie the end of his run, because he was passionate about what he wanted it to be and had to work hard to achieve his vision.
Jackman explained that filming Logan felt like the definitive end to his time as the character. However, after seeing Deadpool, he realized a team-up could be fun, reminding him of classic buddy-cop movies like 48 Hours with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte. Initially, he resisted the idea, sticking to his previous statement about retiring the role. But he ultimately decided to reconsider, saying he changed his mind and didn’t regret it—he thought the experience was fantastic.
Deadpool & WolverineDirector Talks a Potential Fourth Movie
Shawn Levy, the director of Deadpool & Wolverine, has spoken about the future of the series. While there hasn’t been an official announcement for a fourth Deadpool movie, he discussed the possibility of making more films during an interview on On Film…With Kevin McCarthy Podcast.
As Shawn Levy explained, building on established stories gives a project a head start. He pointed to Stranger Things 5 as an example, noting that the existing connection between viewers and characters is a huge advantage. He also described Deadpool & Wolverine as a tribute to the history of the franchise, allowing them to draw on years of pre-existing stories and fan connections.
As a huge Deadpool fan, I was reading what the director said about the future, and it sounds like right now, the movies are basically a trilogy. He admitted making sequels is really hard. He’s done three Night at the Museum films, and he said each one was a massive challenge. Honestly, just knowing how much work goes into getting a sequel right is a little stressful for him, and makes me appreciate what they’ve already done even more!
Hugh Jackman was asked about potentially returning for future Avengers movies in Phase 6. He jokingly said he’s done with making promises about never reprising the role, explaining he changed his mind after years of saying he was finished. After appearing in ten films, he quipped that there’s now enough footage to create an AI version of his character!
Fans who enjoy Hugh Jackman as Wolverine can now watch him in “Deadpool & Wolverine” on Disney+.
