Hugh Jackman is back as Wolverine! Although his role seemed to end for good with the 2017 film Logan, which gave the character a powerful send-off, he’s reprising the part in Deadpool & Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds managed to convince him to return through some clever multiverse storytelling, and the movie has already been a massive hit, earning over $1 billion worldwide.
It’s been a year and a half since that movie came out, and people have been wondering what’s next for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. The ending of Deadpool & Wolverine suggested more possibilities, unlike the seemingly final ending of Logan. Plus, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films will feature other X-Men actors like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. Will Jackman join them? He hasn’t been officially confirmed, but when asked about returning to the role in an interview with Variety, he said:
It didn’t feel like a definitive ending, especially after the movie Logan. I really needed to consider that film the end of my involvement because I had strong ideas about what it should be, and I had to fight to realize them, even declaring it would be my last time. Then, seeing Deadpool, it reminded me of classic buddy cop films like 48 Hrs. with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte. But I kept telling myself I was different, that I wouldn’t go back on my word. Eventually, I realized it was okay to change my mind. It wasn’t a big deal, and I didn’t need to apologize for it – it felt great to just let go and return.
Hugh Jackman’s MCU Return Is Inevitable – But When Will It Happen?
Honestly, even before Hugh Jackman started hinting at it, I fully expected him to play Wolverine again. These days, superhero movies are all about bringing back familiar faces – it’s what gets everyone excited! We’ve already seen it happen with so many actors. Think about all the X-Men folks coming back for Doomsday, or Tobey and Andrew suiting up again in Spider-Man: No Way Home. There are even whispers that they might be involved in Secret Wars too. It feels like anyone can pop up in these films now!
Hugh Jackman’s comments suggest he’ll reprise his role as Wolverine again, it’s just a question of timing. Given the return of other X-Men characters, and expectations of further casting news for Doomsday (even without the recent leaks), it makes sense for Wolverine to reappear. Alternatively, Marvel might be holding him back for a bigger reveal in Secret Wars.
Even after the current storylines conclude, things aren’t necessarily over. The upcoming Secret Wars event is predicted to revamp the Marvel Cinematic Universe and finally introduce the X-Men to the big screen. While new actors will undoubtedly play the mutant roles, the blending of different timelines and universes could allow some existing actors to continue in their roles. Finding a new actor to play Wolverine is a particularly big challenge for the MCU, and the longer Hugh Jackman plays the character, the harder it becomes. So, it wouldn’t be surprising if he continued to appear in future phases, potentially even Phase 7. Regardless of how long he stays, it seems certain that Jackman will return in some capacity.
The next Avengers movie, Doomsday, is scheduled to come out on December 18, 2026. Following that, Secret Wars will be released on December 17, 2027.
