The Hulk is one of Marvel’s most popular and powerful characters – everyone loves him! He’s known as the strongest there is, and you definitely wouldn’t want to upset him. But just *how* strong is he, really? Could he handle challenges beyond fighting people, like natural disasters, cosmic threats, or even dinosaurs? Can he truly smash through absolutely anything?
Marvel’s new Hulk series, *Hulk: Smash Everything*, will explore just how strong the Hulk really is. The first issue, written by Ryan North and illustrated by Vincenzo Carratù, hits stores on December 1st. It promises a lot of action as the Hulk faces a huge variety of challenges. ComicBook has a sneak peek at the series, along with an interview with North and Carratù discussing their vision for this ultimate test of strength for the iconic hero and what excites them most about the project.
How North Approached Writing Hulk and What He Thinks Will Surprise Readers Most
The new comic, *Hulk: Smash Everything*, really explores just how strong the Hulk actually is. Can you tell us about your approach to this story?
Ryan North believes Hulk is a surprisingly relatable character because everyone understands feeling incredibly angry and wanting to destroy something. The new Hulk story aims to put him in completely new and challenging situations, forcing him to find ways to survive even *while* smashing. The creative team is exploring some really imaginative scenarios, brought to life with incredible artwork by Vincenzo, and North is excited to see how readers will react, particularly to the cliffhanger ending of the first issue.
What is something that you think readers will be surprised by in Hulk: Smash Everything?
Readers are in for a wild ride with this Hulk story – and everything that happens is part of the official continuity! It’s a standalone adventure, completely separate from the current events in the main Marvel Universe and won’t interfere with the ongoing Incredible Hulk series by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Nic Klein. However, it definitively proves why the Hulk is considered the strongest there is.
Carratù Teases Hulk: Smash Everything Is The Fun Escape Everyone Needs
The Hulk is one of Marvel’s most iconic characters. What has been your approach to drawing him?
Vincent Carratù began by focusing on the emotion he wanted to evoke in readers. He knew the Hulk was a complex character, far beyond the typical stereotype. He quickly decided on fear – which was actually how he felt when he first learned about the project! The idea of confronting such a huge, furious, and out-of-control being is naturally frightening. To capture this, Carratù revisited all of his Hulk comics to study how previous artists had portrayed the character.
The Hulk is often viewed as pure strength, especially in a story like ‘Hulk: Smash Everything’ where he’s expected to cause a lot of destruction. But he’s actually a surprisingly complex character. While working on the book, what interesting new things did you discover about the Hulk?
I usually draw female characters, so this project is a good chance to practice drawing men. I also enjoy drawing really intense expressions – it’s fun to create faces that are a bit over-the-top but clearly convey strong emotions and connect with people.
What are you most excited for readers to see in this book?
Sometimes you just need a story to help you escape – a really good one, whether it’s grand and sweeping or quietly thought-provoking. When everything feels wrong and you need to switch off, I hope this comic can offer that escape, and bring someone as much joy as it brought us. That’s all I ask – a little smile as they experience the wonders within its pages. We could all use a bit of that.
Marvel’s new comic, *Hulk: Smash Everything* #1, promises non-stop action! The story asks a big question: is the Hulk truly the strongest being in existence? He’s stronger than most people, but what about dinosaurs, planets, or even cosmic forces? This miniseries will put the Hulk to the ultimate test, pitting him against everything imaginable. It’s written by the creator of *One World Under Doom* and *Squirrel Girl*, with art from the artists behind *Psylocke* and *Astonishing Iceman*.
Hulk: Smash Everything #1 goes on sale December 1st.
