A new supernatural horror mystery film, ideal for those who enjoyed The Blair Witch Project, will be available on Hulu in just two weeks.
Starting April 17th, the film Shelby Oaks will be available on the platform. Directed by Chris Stuckmann in his first feature film, and with Mike Flanagan (known for Doctor Sleep and The Fall of the House of Usher) as an executive producer, Shelby Oaks tells the story of a woman named Camille Sullivan who is searching for her missing sister, Sarah Durn. The film was originally released in theaters by Neon on October 24, 2025.
Audiences Loved to Compare Shelby Oaks & The Blair Witch Project
People who saw Shelby Oaks in theaters often remarked on its similarities to The Blair Witch Project. The film’s use of a documentary-style format and found footage created a spooky atmosphere, but some viewers felt it borrowed too heavily from the earlier movie. While some appreciated the connection, others criticized Shelby Oaks for not being original enough.
Reviews for the film Shelby Oaks were quite mixed, as reflected on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics gave it a score of 55% based on over 125 reviews, and audiences weren’t much different, giving it 53% based on more than 500 ratings.
I was really captivated by Shelby Oaks! While the ending wasn’t perfect, the movie built such a creepy atmosphere and genuinely touched me emotionally. It’s a fantastic first film from the director. A lot of people who loved it said it reminded them of classics like Rosemary’s Baby, and even compared it to the style of Ari Aster. Some found it a little predictable, but still thought it was scary, which says a lot!
Hannah Rose describes the film as imperfect but strikingly beautiful, captivating, and even unsettling. She compares Shelby Oaks to its setting – a dilapidated town – noting it’s a bit rough and flawed, but ultimately gorgeous, compelling, and likely to become a beloved cult classic.
Shelby Oaks Was Surprisingly Crowdfunded Through Kickstarter
Despite mixed reactions from viewers and critics, the film Shelby Oaks did reasonably well in theaters. It came out at the same time as other films, including the romance Regretting You, Deliver Me from Nowhere, and the anime movie Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc.
I was pretty surprised by how well Shelby Oaks did! Released right around Halloween when there weren’t a ton of scary movies out, it pulled in $2.4 million on opening weekend, landing it at number seven. Ultimately, it made over $8.1 million worldwide, which is a solid return for Neon considering it cost over a million dollars to make. What’s really cool is how much buzz this indie film had from the start – they actually raised over $650,000 through crowdfunding before it even hit theaters, showing a dedicated fanbase right away.
Shelby Oaks arrives on Hulu on April 17.
