Hulu Is Making One of the Best Comics of the 2010s Into a TV Series (But There’s a Big Problem)

Hollywood relies heavily on comic book movies and shows, especially thanks to the huge popularity of the Marvel and DC universes, which release numerous projects each year and constantly grab the public’s attention. But exciting adaptations aren’t limited to just those two publishers. Shows like The Boys and Invincible have shown there’s a big demand for superhero stories beyond Marvel and DC, and films like Sin City, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and 300 proved that comics without superheroes can also be critically acclaimed and financially successful. Now, a well-known and often debated comic from the 2010s is being adapted into a television series for Hulu.

Hulu’s Onyx Collective is developing a TV series based on the acclaimed comic book Southern Bastards, created by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour. Originally launched in 2014 by Image Comics, the series is a crime story set in the made-up town of Craw County, Alabama. It follows Earl Tubb, who returns to his hometown after four decades to discover it’s controlled by Euless Boss – the high school football coach who secretly runs a criminal empire.

The comic series Southern Bastards received critical acclaim for its honest depiction of the South, well-developed characters, and intense action, winning both a Harvey Award in 2015 and an Eisner Award in 2016. However, in 2020, allegations of misconduct against artist and co-creator Latour brought the series to a sudden stop. This controversy led to an indefinite pause in publication, leaving the story unfinished.

The Southern Bastards TV Show Is in Good Hands

Even though the Southern Bastards comic book series is incomplete and one of its creators has faced controversy, the upcoming Hulu adaptation has a strong creative team behind it. Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, the original creators, are serving as executive producers, indicating they want to stay true to the comic’s core ideas. The pilot episode was written by Bill Dubuque, known for co-creating the popular Netflix series Ozark, which, like Southern Bastards, explores crime in rural America. Dubuque’s other film work includes writing the screenplays for The Accountant, starring Ben Affleck, and The Judge, with Robert Downey Jr.

Nia DaCosta is joining the series, having co-written the pilot and also taking on the role of director. DaCosta is a rising star known for her work on films like the crime thriller Little Woods, the horror sequel Candyman (2021), and the Marvel movie The Marvels. Her diverse experience makes her well-suited to bring the dark and intense world of Southern Bastards to life on screen. The show will also have Matt Olmstead, a seasoned drama producer from shows like Chicago P.D., as showrunner, ensuring a strong team is in place to deliver a compelling crime story.
