Hulu is now streaming a beloved fantasy movie from the early 2000s, giving subscribers a chance to enter a fantastical world. While Hulu already has a great selection of fantasy films—including classics like Labyrinth and recent critically acclaimed movies such as Poor Things—it’s just gotten a little bigger with the addition of a fun fantasy comedy from 2001.
Fans can now watch the 2001 comedy Black Knight on Hulu, as the Martin Lawrence film became available on February 1st. Though it’s gained a dedicated following over the years, Black Knight never got a sequel. The story follows a theme park employee who accidentally travels back to 14th-century England. There, he has to rely on his modern-day skills to survive and team up with a woman and a knight to defeat a cruel king. The film also stars Marsha Thomason, Tom Wilkinson, Vincent Regan, and Kevin Conway. It’s similar in spirit to Mark Twain’s classic novel, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.
Black Knight Is a Hilarious Adventure Through 14th-Century England
While not a perfect comedy or fantasy film, Black Knight is consistently funny and enjoyable. It cleverly mixes medieval settings with modern humor as Lawrence’s character, Jamal, tries to adjust to a world of knights and royalty with his 21st-century attitude. This clash of cultures leads to hilarious moments, like when Jamal introduces the court to modern dance and slang, or when he hilariously struggles to ride a horse. Black Knight is a fast-paced, lighthearted comedy filled with chaos and laughs.
Despite very low scores from critics (15%) and audiences (34%) on Rotten Tomatoes, Black Knight isn’t entirely without merit. It feels like a movie that would have been much more successful if it had been released during the height of the silly, “fish-out-of-water” comedies popular in the 80s and 90s. The film has since gained a following as a cult fantasy-comedy, thanks to its funny, quotable moments and generally outlandish story. While a hilarious sequel would be great, it probably won’t happen.
What’s New on Hulu?
Hulu added a lot of new movies on February 1st, including Black Knight, as well as popular titles like Django Unchained, both Ghostbusters films, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Pretty Woman, Sister Act, and 12 Years A Slave. More movies are coming throughout the month: Clown in a Cornfield arrives on February 10th, followed by Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Smile on February 16th, and The Astronaut on February 20th.
