Science fiction is experiencing a major resurgence in the 2020s. Recent films like Everything Everywhere All at Once and the adaptation of Dune have contributed to a boom in the genre, making this era comparable to the popular sci-fi period of the 1980s. However, not all sci-fi movies have been successful; a recent addition to a popular franchise performed well financially but received very mixed reactions from both critics and viewers, and is now available to stream on Hulu.
You can now watch Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on Hulu. The movie recently became available on the streaming service, moving from Netflix on January 22nd. While it earned $202 million worldwide in theaters, opinions were mixed among critics and viewers. The film features original Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson alongside the new generation of Spengler family members as they work together to prevent another ice age caused by an ancient threat.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Split Critics and Audiences
While Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire did well at the box office, critics weren’t impressed. The film sharply divided opinions, with a large difference between what critics and audiences thought. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics only gave it a 42% rating, making it the lowest-rated film in the Ghostbusters series – significantly lower than the next lowest, Ghostbusters II, which scored 55%. However, audiences had a much more positive view, giving it an 81% rating, which is average for all the Ghostbusters movies.
Critics had a mixed reaction to Frozen Empire, finding the story and number of characters overwhelming. However, some viewers loved it, even calling it the best in the series. Overall, it’s a decent sequel that’s enjoyable despite its flaws, and it leans heavily on familiar elements. While the plot can get complicated, longtime fans will appreciate seeing classic characters like Slimer and the library ghost, and the movie does a good job of introducing new ghosts and expanding the story’s universe. Frozen Empire isn’t the strongest film in the franchise, but it’s entertaining and offers enough new lore to make it worthwhile.
What’s New on Hulu?
January is quickly coming to a close, and it’s been a fantastic month for Hulu viewers! While there are still a few more movies and shows coming to the platform before the end of the month, subscribers are already enjoying recent additions like 28 Weeks Later, Hacksaw Ridge, Predator, Super Troopers, and Twinless.
