It might seem strange to combine Christmas and horror, but a new movie on Hulu shows that the two can make a surprisingly fun pairing. Christmas horror isn’t a recent trend – it’s been around since the 1970s with films like Silent Night, Bloody Night and Black Christmas, and continued with more recent releases like Christmas Bloody Christmas and Terrifier 3. A standout holiday horror film also premiered in the 1980s, and it’s still considered one of the best in the genre over four decades later.
Starting December 1st, Hulu is streaming the classic movie Gremlins. Directed by Joe Dante, written by Chris Columbus, and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the film tells the story of a small town invaded by playful but destructive creatures after a man breaks the rules for caring for his unique new pet – namely, avoiding bright light, water, and food after midnight. It’s a great time to watch, as it’s a beloved Christmas movie, and excitingly, Gremlins 3 is officially in the works and expected to arrive sooner than many fans think!
Gremlins Is a Holiday Horror Movie Worth Watching
Holiday horror films don’t always get the best reviews, and for good reason, but Gremlins stands out as a true gem. It perfectly combines the cozy, magical feeling of classic Christmas movies – think charming small towns and a heartwarming atmosphere – with the wild, scary fun of 1950s monster movies. This creates a uniquely entertaining and frightening experience. The crazy antics of the Gremlins were so innovative, they even helped inspire the creation of the PG-13 rating. Despite all the chaos, the film has a lot of heart. It’s also a clever commentary on consumerism, and it’s one of those movies you can watch countless times and still enjoy, making it a timeless classic.
The first Gremlins movie was a big hit, leading to a sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, six years later. While the second film wasn’t as popular as the original, it was still enjoyable. Fans have been hoping for a third Gremlins movie for over twenty years, and now their wait is almost over! Gremlins 3 is scheduled to be released in November 2027, with the original director, Columbus, returning to direct and Spielberg serving as executive producer.
What’s New on Hulu?
Hulu has added a bunch of new movies, including the popular 80s film Gremlins, which is currently rated ‘Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes. December 1st brought a wave of new content, with plenty of holiday favorites like Disney’s A Christmas Carol, the Home Alone and The Santa Clause series, and The Ultimate Christmas Present. Beyond Christmas movies, you can now stream several films from the Planet of the Apes franchise, as well as 17 Again and Straight Outta Compton.
