A year-old animated film titled “Memoir of a Snail” has become available for streaming on Hulu. Originally released by IFC Films in October last year with an R-rating, this stop-motion movie didn’t perform exceptionally well at the U.S. box office, generating only $669,798 throughout its run. However, it managed to achieve critical acclaim and financial success internationally, earning a total of $6.9 million overseas, bringing the film’s worldwide earnings to approximately $7.6 million on a production budget of around $4.5 million. Now, viewers who missed seeing it in theaters can enjoy it at home through Hulu streaming.
Starting on Tuesday, July 29th, you can now stream the film “Memoir of a Snail” on Hulu. This movie has garnered a remarkable 95% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 143 reviews from critics. The overwhelming consensus among these critics is that “Memoir of a Snail” is a “skilled and emotional story,” and it appears the audience agrees, giving the film an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ popcornmeter. Adam Elliot wrote and directed this movie, with Jacki Weaver playing Pinky, Sarah Snook as Grace Pudel, Eric Bana as James the Magistrate, Saxon Wright as Bert, Dominique Pinon as Percy Pudel, and Adam Elliot as Denise Floyd starring in it.
The film focuses on the character of Grace Pudel, an unusual girl with a fascination for snails and books, who experiences a string of mishaps after she loses her twin brother, Gilbert, following a sad event. Even though Gilbert keeps trying to contact Grace after their parting, their inability to meet leaves Grace to focus more on her passions, leading her to compulsively buy and hoard snail-related items. In the course of events, Grace forms a friendship with an old lady named Pinky, who manages to find positivity even in hard times, and eventually takes care of Grace as a foster parent.
Although Gilbert isn’t around, Grace remains increasingly melancholic, with Pinky assisting in her upbringthrough adolescence. As she matures, Grace experiences love but her life spirals further into sadness, a shift that will significantly alter her destiny forever. This poignant autobiography is filled with fondness for snails, books, and guinea pigs. Given its mature themes like mortality, death, and adult abuse, this isn’t a film suitable for younger viewers. However, Memoir of a Snail is described as being both heart-wrenching and comical for those who appreciate dark humor.
Apart from being streamable on Hulu, the film “Memoir of a Snail” can also be purchased in Blu-Ray or DVD format. For those keen to explore more works by writer and director Adam Elliot, they can watch “Mary & Max,” another one of his films available on Hulu, which was released in 2009. Similar to “Memoir of a Snail,” this stop-motion film received critical acclaim and boasted a 96% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to these films, Elliot has also directed numerous stop-motion shorts like “Uncle,” “Cousin,” “Brother,” and “Harvie Krumpet.
