Hulu’s 2-Part Sci-Fi Masterpiece Is Lost’s Perfect Replacement (Stephen King Says So)

Hulu is enjoying success with its new sci-fi show, and it’s even earned praise from horror legend Stephen King. King is a keen observer of television, especially since many of his books are currently being adapted for the screen. HBO’s Welcome to Derry was a breakout hit in its first season and is eagerly awaiting a second season. Interestingly, Welcome to Derry took similar creative risks to the Hulu series, which could be why Stephen King is such a fan.

Wow, Season 2 of Paradise just wrapped up, and it’s definitely got people talking – some aren’t thrilled with the direction it took. But as a huge fan, I was really excited to hear Stephen King loves where the show is going! He actually compared it to Lost, which is high praise in my book. That really makes me think the creators are onto something special, and I’m totally on board for whatever happens next.

Someone watching the season finale of Paradise on Twitter said the show is the most similar to Lost currently on television.

Stephen King shared someone’s post, adding a playful comment – simply “Yup true boo!”

Is Hulu’s Paradise the Next Lost?

The series Paradise is often compared to Lost, and for good reason. It began as a modern-day mystery with flashbacks, eventually leading the characters to a secluded, underground location. Like Lost‘s later seasons, the second season of Paradise has faced criticism for dividing its story between the main setting (the bunker) and the outside world. Surprisingly, both shows also took a sharp turn into time-travel science fiction.

As a critic, I’m seeing a really split reaction to both of these shows, and it reminds me of the trouble Lost Season 4 had. That season was made during the 2007 Hollywood Writers Strike, which threw everything off track – the storylines, the characters… it was a mess. Then they decided to add time travel on top of that? It just didn’t work, and honestly, the problems kept showing up all the way through Season 5. It felt like they were digging a deeper hole with every episode.

The show Paradise dramatically shifted gears in its Season 2 finale, overwhelming viewers with new concepts. It quickly introduced a powerful AI computer named ALEX and complicated ideas about perceiving time beyond our normal understanding, suggesting a connection between the past and future. Many viewers had already been surprised by the show’s shift from a spy thriller to a story set in a post-apocalyptic bunker. Now, with the addition of time travel and multiverse theories, Paradise has changed direction again, and it’s proven difficult for many to follow.

Whether Paradise lives up to comparisons with Lost depends on how well the show wraps things up in its final season, Season 3. And it’s important to note: Paradise really needs a stronger ending than Lost had if it wants to be considered a truly successful show.

Both Paradise and Lost are now available to stream on Hulu. Join the discussion about these shows on the ComicBook Forum!
