Hulu’s Forgotten Stephen King Sci-Fi Show Is Now on Netflix (And It’s a Streaming Hit)

Stephen King is incredibly popular in the world of adaptations – and for good reason. Beyond his many successful movies, his books have inspired numerous TV series and miniseries, from the classic adaptation of Salem’s Lot to HBO’s new It: Welcome to Derry. Recently, one of King’s older sci-fi thrillers has found a new audience on Netflix, becoming a streaming hit ten years after it first aired on Hulu, especially with a surge of new King adaptations arriving in 2025.

Based on Stephen King’s novel, the sci-fi thriller 11.22.63 follows James Franco as a teacher who travels back in time to try and prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Originally a Hulu original in 2016, the eight-episode series was removed from the platform in 2024, but it recently became available again on streaming services. After appearing on Tubi, it launched on Netflix on January 7th and has quickly become popular. As of January 8th, 11.22.63 entered Netflix’s Top 10 in the U.S. and has consistently ranked among the top three shows, currently holding the No. 2 spot behind His & Hers.

11.22.63 Is a Hit After Returning To Streaming, and It’s No Surprise

Though released amidst many Stephen King adaptations, 11.22.63 recently found success on streaming platforms, which isn’t unexpected given its track record. Created with executive producers Stephen King, J.J. Abrams, Bridget Carpenter, and Bryan Burk, the series aimed to be a major hit for Hulu, and it delivered. It proved Hulu could create popular, high-quality original shows and received award nominations, as well as positive reviews. With an 83% ‘Certified Fresh’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, 11.22.63 ranks among the best Stephen King TV adaptations, even surpassing the first season of It: Welcome to Derry (which scored 81%).

Critics are calling 11.22.63 a fantastic and captivating show – a true TV highlight. It currently ranks at number two on Netflix, surpassing popular series like Run Away, Stranger Things, Emily in Paris, and Prodigal Son, and it absolutely earns that spot. This is one of the best adaptations of Stephen King’s work yet. The series is a compelling and accurate portrayal of the novel, skillfully blending historical fiction and time travel with well-developed characters, making it a thoroughly enjoyable eight-episode binge.

What’s New on Netflix?

I finished watching 11.22.63 recently – it’s only eight episodes, and honestly, it was so good I binged it right away! Luckily, Netflix has been adding a ton of stuff, so I’m not stuck wondering what to watch next. They’ve got all seasons of shows like Falling Skies, Found, The Following, and Prodigal Son available. And if I’m in a movie mood, they just added some great titles like Dawn of the Dead, District 9, Man on Fire, and Priscilla. Plenty to keep me entertained!
