Science fiction is hugely popular on television these days, with shows exploring the genre in many different ways. Whether it’s frightening futures, imaginative worlds, complex time travel, or near-future settings, you can find it all in today’s biggest shows. Most sci-fi series quickly establish their world and core ideas, but some enjoy building suspense and revealing surprising twists. In fact, one of the most-watched shows on TV recently delivered a major one.
Hulu’s popular series, Paradise, started out by leading viewers to believe it was a spy thriller. The show initially presented itself as the story of Secret Service agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) protecting President Cal Bradford (James Marsden) from a danger lurking within his own staff. But in a major surprise reveal, Paradise is actually a science fiction series set in a futuristic underground town. This town was built as a safe haven to survive a global catastrophe. However, the community within the bunker holds many hidden secrets, and Xavier begins to expose them.
Paradise‘s Season 2 Finale Changed The Game… Again

Throughout the first season of Paradise, Xavier discovered that Samantha “Sinatra” Redmond (Julianne Nicholson) was secretly running things from inside the bunker, and that life continued outside, including in cities like Atlanta—where he believed his wife, Terry (Enuka Okuma), had been lost. Season 2 saw Xavier leave the bunker to search for Terry after receiving a radio message from her. Remarkably, he found her and brought her—along with the community she was living with—back to the bunker. However, internal conflict—a group of rebels attempting to take control from Sinatra—led to a disaster that destroyed the bunker, leaving everyone to face the dangers of the outside world.
Season 2 of Paradise received some criticism, particularly regarding its slow pace. Instead of focusing directly on Xavier and the returning characters, the season took a winding path, introducing new people and storylines, including one confusing plotline that left many viewers puzzled. However, the season finale of Paradise finally explained that seemingly random plot, and it turned out to be a major turning point for the entire show!
Be warned, major spoilers ahead! Throughout season 2 of Paradise, Xavier kept having a puzzling vision that was connected to the experiences of Link, a gifted engineer traveling the ruined landscape. Link was attempting to oversee, repair, or disable the country’s abandoned nuclear power plants. Their paths crossed multiple times, eventually revealing that Link was actually Dylan, Sinatra’s son, who had previously died from a rare illness. Somehow, Dylan survived and created a sophisticated AI computer called “Alex.” Sinatra then stole this system from Link’s teacher (after killing her) and brought it into the bunker.

The Season 2 finale takes a surprising turn when Alex learns from Sinatra’s tech team that the AI has become incredibly intelligent – surpassing anything they’ve ever seen. It’s now able to perceive things beyond our normal understanding of time and can even predict and influence future events. Alex accurately foresees Sinatra’s death (sacrificing himself to prevent a nuclear disaster) and knows that Xavier, nicknamed “X,” will survive and become the AI’s new main user. Sinatra’s final mission for Xavier is to reach Alex, follow the AI’s instructions, and attempt to alter the past to create a better future than the bleak present they’re living in.
Basically, Season 3 of Paradise will explore time travel and the multiverse – a surprising twist for viewers, as this is the second time the show has misled its audience with an unexpected direction.
Paradise Producer & Star Explain the Multiverse Twist, What It Means For Season 3

Sterling K. Brown, star of the show Paradise (known for This Is Us), has been talking about the show’s surprising twist and its new direction into science fiction involving the multiverse. This kind of storytelling has become very common lately, with franchises like Marvel, DC, and Star Trek, as well as films like Everything Everywhere All At Once and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and shows like Rick and Morty and Dark, all exploring different versions of the multiverse. Because it’s been done so much, Paradise making this change to a time travel/multiverse story now is a bold move. The question is, why take this risk, and can the show make it work?
Sterling K. Brown believes the show explores the idea of multiple universes. He explained to Variety that shows involving science fiction often consider time travel and its rules. Brown mentioned being captivated by ‘Back to the Future’ as an early example, and notes that Marvel and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ have also tackled the multiverse. He finds the concept particularly interesting, suggesting that ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ feels surprisingly relatable and opens your mind to the idea that anything imaginable could be possible.

Dan Fogelman, the creator of This Is Us, needs to assure viewers that Paradise’s take on the multiverse will focus more on emotional impact than scientific explanation. Just because alternate versions of life exist doesn’t mean every character will be eager to change their past.
Now that this new element has entered the story, the central question is what the characters truly desire. Do they want to return to the way things were, or forge ahead and ignore it? Is it something too strange or dangerous to investigate, or is it too fascinating to resist? Each character will make a different choice, depending on their personal situation, and we’ll see how those decisions unfold throughout Season 3.
Executive producer John Hoberg remained tight-lipped about Season 3, declining to compare it to other shows that use the multiverse concept. He explained that the season centers around a task given to Xavier, and the central question is whether he’ll complete it, and what the consequences will be either way. Hoberg hinted that there’s a specific reason Xavier is known as ‘User X,’ which will be revealed as the season unfolds.
You can now watch seasons 1 and 2 of Paradise on Hulu. A third season is being made, and it will be the last one. Join the conversation about the show on the ComicBook Forum!
