Sometimes, controversy can actually help a movie, and that’s proven true for a ten-year-old film now available on Hulu. Throughout November, Disney+ is offering a variety of movies, including favorites like 13 Going On 30, Julie & Julia, and The Sound of Music. Joining the lineup on November 1st was a film that caused quite a stir back in 2014 – it even led to international disagreements.
The comedy The Interview, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, caused a major international incident when North Korea called it an act of war. Directed by Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the film began streaming on Hulu on November 1st. It follows two talk show hosts—played by Rogen and Franco—who are unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a storyline that led to real-world political tensions.
The Interview’s Infamous Legacy
The movie The Interview is famous for all the wrong reasons. Its plot, which involves the assassination of North Korea’s leader, caused a huge uproar. The North Korean government strongly protested the film, calling it an act of war and terrorism, and threatened serious consequences if it was released. This led Sony to postpone the film’s release and reduce violent scenes, including the depiction of Kim Jong Un’s death. In November 2014, a hacking group called Guardians of Peace – believed to be connected to North Korea – attacked Sony’s computer systems and threatened any cinemas planning to show the movie.
The uproar surrounding The Interview actually helped the movie succeed. Initially, critics considered it an average, unremarkable comedy, but the controversy drew a lot of public attention. Even though it didn’t play in theaters and went straight to online platforms, it earned Sony $40 million in digital rentals, becoming their most profitable digital release.
Despite receiving mixed reviews – a 51% critic score and 48% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes – The Interview is a remarkably well-known film. It notably changed how movies are distributed, demonstrating the considerable money that can be made through digital platforms.
What’s New on Hulu?
Hulu is adding a lot of new movies and shows this November! A large batch of titles became available on November 1st, including films like A Knight’s Tale, the 2023 version of The Color Purple, Eragon, The Jane Austen Book Club, and The Last Duel. Hulu is also getting ready for the holidays, with a selection of Christmas movies already available, ranging from classic versions of Miracle on 34th Street (from 1947 and 1994) to Deck the Halls.
