Hulu’s Shogun Is a Certified Hit

Hiroyuki Sanada, who starred in films like The Last Samurai and John Wick: Chapter 4, leads and helped create the show Shogun. His involvement, along with a talented cast, is a major reason why the series has quickly become a global streaming hit and is considered one of the best streaming shows in recent years.

When it premiered in 2024, the show received overwhelmingly positive reviews, earning a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. Audiences loved it too, giving it an 85% approval rating, which quickly led Hulu to renew it for another season.

The show’s stunning visuals are a major strength, effectively transforming the landscapes of British Columbia (with some filming in London) into feudal Japan. This beautiful setting perfectly complements a compelling storyline that truly resonates with viewers. The first season, consisting of 10 episodes released in April 2024, deeply explores the drama, political intrigue, and consequences of a Japanese civil war.

When Will Season 2 of Shogun Debut on Hulu?

To feel truly authentic, Shogun features mostly Japanese dialogue with English subtitles. An English dub is available, but honestly, watching it dubbed isn’t recommended – especially if you enjoy Japanese anime in its original language.

Sanada explained to Good Morning America that the story is set in Japan and they worked hard to portray it realistically. They made sure the characters primarily spoke Japanese, but included English subtitles to make it accessible to a wider audience, striving for a good balance between authenticity and understanding.

Sanada shared his excitement about the positive response to ‘Shogun,’ noting it was a pleasant surprise. As both the lead actor and a producer, he thoroughly enjoys his time on set, whether in the studio or on location. He’s involved in every detail – from checking props and costumes to overseeing decorations and extras. The process involves a lot of preparation and quick changes – like getting into costume and applying his wig – but he finds it incredibly rewarding.

Okay, so everyone’s going crazy for Shogun, and rightfully so! It’s already filming, which is awesome, but it looks like we’re going to be waiting a while to actually see it. The current buzz is late 2027 or early 2028 for a Hulu release. It’s a bit of a wait, I know, but if the first season is anything to go by, it’ll totally be worth it!
