Hunter x Hunter Confirms New Surprise Anime But It’s Not What You Think

Yoshihiro Togashi’s Hunter x Hunter, first published in 1998, is a hugely popular and critically acclaimed manga and anime series. It quickly became known for its creative power system, detailed world, compelling stories, and well-developed characters. Unfortunately, Togashi’s health issues have caused frequent and lengthy breaks in the manga’s release schedule since 2006. The publisher, Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, has been understanding, allowing Togashi to work at his own speed to protect his health. An initial anime adaptation aired from 1999 to 2001, running for 62 episodes, shortly after the manga began.

Nippon TV and VAP brought back Hunter x Hunter in 2011 with a new anime series that covered more of the manga’s story than the original. However, because the anime outpaced the available manga chapters, it stopped airing in 2014, leaving fans without a complete story for over ten years. The manga itself is currently focused on the Succession Contest Arc, which began in 2012 and is still being released. It briefly returned last year with ten new chapters before going on another break. Author Yoshihiro Togashi is actively working on more chapters and keeping fans updated through his official X account. Although a continuation of the anime (which ended after the Chimera Ant Arc) hasn’t been announced, a new mobile game will include a special animated segment.

Upcoming Hunter x Hunter Game Confirms a Special Animation Video

Wonder Planet Inc.’s new game, Hunter x Hunter Nen x Survivor, is a fast-paced, action-packed rogue-lite game where players control distinct characters and battle waves of enemies. Originally announced in March, it’s designed to be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. The game is scheduled for a worldwide release on February 17, 2026, and pre-registration is now available on the official website.

The official X account has announced a special animated video is coming soon, with glimpses of popular characters like Gon and Killua. While details are limited, it seems to be a short animated scene based on the original story by Togashi, and will be released as a promotional movie for the game shortly before its launch.

To celebrate the game’s launch, a new illustration was shared on the official X account. It shows Gon with a fishing rod, heading out to sea – a scene from the beginning of the story where his aunt Mito challenges him to catch a legendary fish. Mito, who raised Gon, worried about the dangers of the Hunter profession and initially didn’t want him to pursue the Hunter Exam, known for being incredibly difficult and risky.
