Channel 5 is creating a new drama in two parts that tells the real story of what happened leading to the end of Huw Edwards‘ career at BBC News.
The upcoming series, currently called ‘Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards’, has been in the works for a year. It’s the first time 5’s factual and drama teams have worked together on a single project.
I just saw the first image from the new series, and it’s exciting to see Martin Clunes – you probably know him from Doc Martin – taking on the role of Edwards. It’s a great bit of casting, and I’m already intrigued!
The show will center around a newsreader whose life unravels as he’s revealed to have committed serious sexual offenses against children. It will depict his downfall and ultimately, his public resignation and conviction.

In 2024, Edwards admitted to creating indecent images of children. He received a six-month suspended sentence, meaning he won’t go to prison unless he violates the terms, and must participate in a sex offender rehabilitation program.
Channel 5 described the new series as a raw and dramatic portrayal of the Edwards scandal, offering a complex and sensitive look at the events and the emotions involved.
The organization stated it will expand upon a thorough investigation conducted over the last year. This research included direct interviews with key individuals involved in the scandal, collaboration with those at the center of it, and exclusive access to The Sun newspaper’s prize-winning reporting on Edwards.

According to Ben Frow, head of content at Channel 5, this is a significant and disturbing story about a person who abused their power and broke the trust placed in them.
We delve into the personal stories behind the news by speaking with the people directly involved and the investigators. This program is a unique collaboration between Channel 5’s factual and drama teams.
Michael Samuels, who directed ‘The Trial,’ and Mark Burt, a writer for ‘Coronation Street,’ created the series. We don’t know when it will be released yet.
Clunes will also appear in Emerald Fennell’s new film version of Wuthering Heights, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. The movie will be released in UK cinemas on February 13th.
