Huw Edwards issues critical statement on upcoming 5 TV drama depicting his downfall

Huw Edwards has released a statement regarding a new five-part drama series that will depict his life, including the events leading to his conviction as a sex offender.

“Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards” is a documentary created by Wonderhood Studios. It features insights from the Sun journalists who first reported the story, as well as contributions from the family involved in the original news report.

A front-page story in a tabloid newspaper revealed that a prominent BBC presenter was under investigation for paying someone for explicit photos. The report stated he had been communicating with this person since they were a teenager.

The drama series tells the story through the eyes of a person whose identity remains unknown. In the show, this individual is referred to as ‘Ryan,’ played by Osian Morgan of Under Salt Marsh.

In a statement to MailOnline, Edwards criticised Wonderhood, saying they didn’t bother to verify any part of their story with him before making the program.

After the situation had already unfolded, they finally requested a statement, but insisted on the ability to change it before it was released. They also wouldn’t say whether anyone who made accusations had been compensated for doing so.

Edwards stated he’s working on writing his own version of what happened, but it’s taking time because he isn’t feeling well.

I think a lot of people just don’t get mental illness, and honestly, it should never be used as a free pass for doing something illegal. But it can definitely shed some light on why someone might act in a way that’s truly shocking or awful. For me, understanding it helped me see how things spiraled out of control and why I ended up where I did.

Edwards then asked if the show’s actions were reasonable and just, and whether they followed Ofcom’s broadcasting rules.

The broadcaster confirmed the drama was made following the rules set out in Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code.

According to a channel spokesperson who spoke with TopMob, the program ‘Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards’ is built on in-depth interviews with the person affected, their family, the reporters who broke the story, text messages between them and Edwards, and details from court proceedings.

Six weeks before the program aired, Huw Edwards was given the opportunity to respond to all claims made in the film through his legal representatives.

Martin Clunes plays the role of Edwards in the five-part drama. He stars alongside Morgan, Sian Reese-Williams (known for ‘Hidden’ and ‘Craith’), and Jason Hughes (‘Midsomer Murders’), who play his mother and stepfather, respectively, as the character ‘Ryan’.

Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards will premiere on 5 on Tuesday 24 March 2026.
