AAA Games Studio and Koei Tecmo recently announced that their Nintendo Switch 2 game, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, has already sold over one million copies. This is a significant achievement, considering the game launched just a few months ago in November.
Okay, so Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is basically a super-fast-paced action game where you’re fighting tons of enemies – think of it like the Dynasty Warriors games, but set in the Zelda universe. It’s a sequel of sorts to Tears of the Kingdom, and the main story is all about stopping Ganondorf’s invasion. You’re constantly battling waves of baddies, and it’s a ton of fun if you like that kind of thing!
The game lets you play as several characters, like Princess Zelda, Mineru, and the Sages, as well as many new faces. Each character has a unique way of playing, and you can customize their abilities even more by using powerful Zonai Devices.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment offers a story mode for one player, and also lets you team up with friends for co-op action, either on the same screen or through a local wireless connection.
Hidemaro Fujibayashi, director of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, recently explained how the game’s story was influenced by the development of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. He noted that the Sages appeared frequently and were visually distinct in Age of Imprisonment, whereas in Tears of the Kingdom, their faces are largely concealed.
According to director Fujibayashi, a key element of Tears of the Kingdom‘s story involved the Sages being masked and unnamed. He explained this was a deliberate choice to prevent the story from becoming overly complex, as revealing too much about their personalities and appearances would have expanded the narrative too far. He expressed satisfaction that players have noticed and appreciated this subtle aspect, particularly in relation to the Imprisoning War.
In Age of Imprisonment, the story centers around Zelda being transported to the past just as Ganondorf is about to invade Hyrule. There, she meets and befriends Hyrule’s king and queen, Raaru and Sonia, and joins forces with other heroes to fight against Ganondorf’s army.
Eiji Aonuma, producer of The Legend of Zelda series, discussed the collaboration between Nintendo and Koei Tecmo, explaining how it will improve the next major Zelda game. He also playfully suggested that Koei Tecmo might release a new Zelda title on the Nintendo Switch 2 before Nintendo does.
Aonuma hinted that the upcoming Zelda game might show the influence of their work with Koei Tecmo. He encouraged players to keep this in mind while enjoying Age of Imprisonment and to anticipate the next Zelda title.
Fujibayashi shared that the collaboration was a lot of fun, explaining that Koei Tecmo brought fresh ideas to The Legend of Zelda that his team wouldn’t have thought of on their own. He specifically highlighted their experience with the Musou style of gameplay as being particularly inspiring.
