Following the success of last year’s The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Princess Zelda is back as the main character in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. The game is now available on Nintendo Switch 2, and unlike the previous Hyrule Warriors game on Switch 1, this new installment has a direct connection to the story of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Be warned, there are minor spoilers ahead for those who haven’t played the game! The story involves Zelda traveling back in time to Hyrule’s earlier days, when King Rauru and Queen Sonia were in power. A war with the evil Demon King Ganondorf is brewing, and Zelda joins forces with the Sages, a cheerful Korok, and a mysterious figure who looks just like Link to fight back against the darkness and protect the kingdom.
Despite adding new characters and gameplay features like Sync Strikes and Unique Skills to fight enemies, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment has received reviews similar to those of previous games in the series. It currently has a Metascore of 79, based on 59 reviews.
Compared to Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition and Age of Calamity – both of which received a Metascore of 78 – this game shares similar weaknesses, like uninspired mission design. It makes you question whether Nintendo will try a different approach going forward, but considering how well other Switch exclusives are doing, it’s hard to say.
