Since Hytale is a crafting and survival game inspired by Minecraft, it naturally includes a way to farm resources.
You can grow crops for food or to create items. While the system uses a unique resource called Essence of Life, it’s generally a familiar farming experience.
In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to get started with farming!
How to Start Farming

Okay, so if you want to get into farming, the first thing you gotta do is build a Farmer’s Workbench. You can craft it at any regular Workbench using these materials:
- Any Tree Trunk x6 – Obtained by cutting down any type of tree.
- Plant Fiber x20 – Primarily obtained from cutting tall grass found in the wild.
The Farmer’s Workbench is your farm’s central hub, providing all the essential tools you’ll need.

To get started, you’ll want to make a Crude Hoe, an Empty Watering Can, and Crude Shears. These are the essential tools for farming!
First, you’ll need to find Shears. Once you have them, keep an eye out for fully grown plants while you’re exploring – things like mature Pumpkins or Wheat, which appear randomly.
When you find a fully grown crop, use the Shears to collect it. You might randomly receive a seed from that same crop, which you can then plant on your farm.
And the best part? You also get Essences of Life! Seriously, these are super useful – think of them as a way to earn rewards. You can trade them in at the Farmer’s Workbench for Seeds and Saplings, so you can keep growing your garden. It’s a great system!
Let’s be honest, starting out with farming can be challenging. It depends a lot on exploring and getting lucky, because you need to find wild plants to gather resources before you can actually build up your farm. But don’t worry, it definitely gets easier as you go!
How to Plant and Tend to Crops

So, at the start of the game, I found the best way to get seeds was just by gathering them from wild plants. But, if I was impatient, I could also head over to the Farmer’s Workbench and check out the Seeds section – they had some available there too.
All the different Seeds in the game are available in one place, where you can buy them using Essences of Life. You can unlock even more Seeds by upgrading your Farmer’s Workbench.
After you get some seeds, use your Crude Hoe to prepare the ground for planting. Simply select the hoe and right-click on any dirt or grass block to till it!
Next, choose the seed you want to use and click on a tile of soil. This will plant the seed, and your crop will begin growing on its own. After that, you don’t need to do much else!
You can make your crops grow faster! Simply use your Watering Can to collect water from lakes, rivers, or the ocean, and then water the soil. You’ll know it’s working because the soil will become darker, showing it’s been watered.
Watering your crops isn’t required, but it’s definitely a good idea! It currently makes them grow 2.5 times faster.
As a farmer in the game, I’ve found something really useful! You can actually make crops grow twice as fast by crafting a Fertilizer Bag at the Farmer’s Workbench. It’s a total game-changer for getting those harvests in quickly!
Okay, so if you want your crops to grow super quickly, definitely use both the Watering Can and the Fertilizer Bag on them. Trust me, it makes a huge difference!
Now, all that’s left is to wait for your crops to mature, then return to gather them. You’ll receive the crops and some Essence of Life, but keep in mind that you won’t get any seeds back after harvesting.
How do Saplings Work
You can also get tree saplings at the Farmer’s Workbench by exchanging Essences of Life. These saplings let you grow all the different kinds of trees in the game.
Luckily, planting young trees is really easy. You don’t have to prepare the ground at all – just find an open space of dirt or grass. Simply select the sapling and right-click to plant it!
Adding Animals to the Farm

Besides plants, you can also raise animals on your farm. Just like you see cows and sheep in nature, they’d be a wonderful addition!
Unfortunately, the animal system is quite limited right now. In the current Early Access version, you can’t tame animals, and they don’t reproduce or age – they stay the same forever.
Currently, getting animals onto your farm is quite difficult. The only method available is to build a fence and try to guide the animals inside. Unfortunately, even using the Feed Bag doesn’t work – it doesn’t attract them at all.
Unfortunately, the animal system is still quite limited right now. You can try using the Capture Crate to get animals, but it only works on smaller ones.

Even though things can be tough, you can still find some really helpful stuff out in the wild! I’ve found that if you hang around cows, they’ll give you Milk, and you can use Shears on sheep to get Wool Scraps. Plus, I built a Chicken Coop, and now all the chickens nearby lay Eggs that I can collect – it’s awesome!
Animals sometimes leave behind waste, which might seem unpleasant. But you can actually collect it to create a Fertilizer Bag to help your crops grow! So, it’s a good idea to pick it up when you see it.
Now that we’ve covered the fundamentals of farming in Hytale, you should be ready to get started! While you can find extra items like decorative blocks at your Farmer’s Workbench, you have everything you need to build your own farm right now.
