While exploring the world of Hytale, you’ll likely find more items than you can carry. That’s where the Backpack upgrade comes in handy – it helps you manage your inventory and avoid getting overwhelmed!
This guide covers everything you need to know about getting more inventory space in Hytale by upgrading your backpack.
How To Craft And Use A Backpack
You can upgrade your Backpack as soon as you unlock a Workbench. The upgrade is found in the ‘Tinkering’ tab, which is the fourth one at the top. Here’s what you’ll need to craft it:
- Iron Ingot x8
- Medium Leather x8
Okay, so getting Iron Ingots is pretty easy – just toss some Iron Ore into a Furnace. But Medium Leather? That’s a bit more work. You’ll need to hunt down a bunch of Wolves and Moose, and then actually process their hides in a Tanning Rack. It’s a grind, but worth it!
After getting the Backpack, you need to add it to your quick access bar to use it. If it seems to vanish when you equip it, that’s because it doesn’t create a separate bag inside your inventory. Instead, it adds nine extra slots to your existing inventory. You can find these new slots by clicking the bag icon on the right side of the screen, located at the bottom of the column below Pocket Crafting and Collected Memories. The buttons act as toggles, so you can leave it on to keep the extra slots visible at all times.
Making more Backpacks after you’ve used one is unnecessary, as they can only be used once. The game will tell you, ‘An item of this type can only be used once and you have already used one!’
Instead you will want to craft the two distinct Backpack Upgrades.
Upgrade A Backpack
The initial Backpack Upgrade is fairly simple to create, but you’ll first need a Tier 2 Workbench. To craft it, you’ll need these materials:
- Cindercloth Scraps x40
- Cobalt Ingots x8
- Heavy Leather x24
You can only find Cindercloth Scraps by defeating enemies in volcanic areas. To get Cobalt Ingots, you’ll need to smelt Cobalt Ore in a Furnace – it’s a one-to-one trade. Cobalt Ore is found in the mountains of cold regions and at specific desert mining locations.
Heavy Leather is made by tanning Heavy Hides. These hides are obtained by hunting and butchering large animals like bears and crocodiles.
The Backpack Upgrade I works just like a regular Backpack. You equip it in your hotbar and use it to add nine more spaces to your Inventory. Like the original Backpack, you can only use it once – it can’t be made again after being used.
Backpack Upgrade II
Improving your backpack to Tier 2 requires a bit of work. First, you’ll need to upgrade your Workbench to Tier 3. Once that’s done, you can craft the Backpack Upgrade II using these materials:
- Voidheart x1
- Adamantite Ingots x8
- Storm Leathers x16
Luckily, you only need one Voidheart to complete this upgrade. Voidhearts are a rare drop from Voidspawns, which are tough enemies that only appear at night.
To get Adamantite Ingots, you’ll need to smelt Adamantite Ore in a Furnace – it’s a one-to-one conversion. You can only find Adamantite Ore in the Cinder Wastes, a dangerous area in the Devastated Lands, both on the surface and underground. You’ll also need a Pickaxe made from strong materials to mine it.
Storm Leather is intended to be crafted from Storm Hides, following the established system for other materials. However, currently, neither the Storm Hides themselves nor any creatures that could drop them are available in the game.
Right now, you can only get the Backpack Upgrade II in creative mode or by using console commands.
The Backpack Upgrade II works just like the original Backpack and Upgrade I: equip it in your hotbar and use it to add nine more slots to your Inventory. Like the other upgrades, you can only use it once – it can’t be crafted or reused.
Here’s a summary of everything we currently know about increasing your inventory space using the Backpack and its two upgrades in Hytale.
