I Can’t Believe Disney Isn’t Capitalizing on the Best Alien Story in 39 Years (& It’s Part of a Bigger Problem)

The Alien movies haven’t consistently found success in recent years, but the latest film offers a promising sign for the future. Ever since Ridley Scott’s original Alien (1979) became a science fiction classic, the series has had its share of hits and misses. James Cameron’s Aliens (1986) was a fantastic follow-up, continuing the story of Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and the terrifying creatures, but later prequels and sequels haven’t quite lived up to that standard. The newest movie, Alien: Romulus (2024), has revitalized the franchise, especially now that it’s part of the Disney family, and the next installment could be the most impressive Alien film yet.

As a huge Alien fan, I can honestly say Alien: Earth is the best thing to come out of the franchise since Aliens. It’s a prequel set two years before the original film, and it follows a Weyland-Yutani ship crashing on Earth with a bunch of alien creatures – including, of course, a Xenomorph. Everyone’s been raving about how well it expands the Alien universe and the action is genuinely thrilling. Critics and regular viewers alike have loved it! But here’s the frustrating part: it’s been over a month since the first season ended, and Disney still hasn’t renewed it for a second season. That’s really worrying, because if Alien: Earth doesn’t get picked up soon, the whole franchise could lose some serious steam.

Alien: Earth Needs a Second Season (and Soon)

Season 1 of Alien: Earth is a fantastic addition to the Alien franchise, and it definitely deserves to be renewed. The show introduces terrifying new creatures, like the eye monster and parasitic blood bugs, and also expands the universe by including characters who are human, cyborgs, or human-synthetic hybrids. What really sets Alien: Earth apart is its well-developed cast – from the dedicated security officer Kumi Morrow (Babou Ceesay) to the intriguing hybrid Wendy (Sydney Chandler). The show also delves deeper than ever before into a future controlled by powerful corporations, with strong themes of capitalism, greed, and the abuse of power, making it a promising story that needs to continue.

Trouble brews when the alien creatures of Weyland-Yutani collide with Prodigy Corporation, led by its bold CEO, Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin). In the season one finale of Alien: Earth, Wendy and the other hybrid youngsters – the Lost Boys – escape the facility, turning the tables on their captors with the help of the xenomorphs. The season ends on a suspenseful note, leaving viewers eager for season two to find out what happens when Weyland-Yutani’s forces finally arrive.

The show Alien: Earth has left viewers with many unanswered questions, and it’s important these are addressed soon to keep them engaged. While the future of Season 2 is currently uncertain, this is especially disappointing given the show’s strong potential. However, creator Noah Hawley has a plan for the story that extends beyond the first season and remains hopeful about a second season being made.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter last September, showrunner Noah Hawley expressed confidence in the show’s initial launch. He’s hoping for a quick decision about a second season, saying he’d like to know soon whether he needs to start looking for other work or if he can get back to making the show. Currently, there’s no word on whether Alien: Earth will return for a second season, and Disney needs to make a decision relatively soon.

The Alien Franchise Could Lose Its Best Chance at Long-Term Success

If Disney doesn’t quickly approve a second season of Alien: Earth, the Alien franchise risks losing a rare recent win. Typically, popular franchises renew their TV shows while they’re still on the air or shortly after. Disney, for example, quickly announced a multi-season plan for Daredevil: Born Again, and HBO immediately greenlit seasons 3 and 4 of House of the Dragon after its season finale. The lack of any positive news about Alien: Earth for over a month is concerning and suggests a second season might not happen.

While a second season of Alien: Earth is still possible, it could be two or three years before new episodes air. Disney’s hesitation to confirm the season is disappointing, especially since the show has been a bright spot for the Alien franchise. Fans are hoping for complete stories and a clear plan for the future of the Alien universe. Disney, which has owned the rights since 2019, needs to make a decision about Alien: Earth quickly to build on the show’s success and avoid losing momentum.
