I Can’t Believe Marvel Just Broke 1 Avenger’s Power Rules For The 3rd Time

For ten years, fans have been puzzled by how one Avenger’s abilities work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the new animated series *Marvel Zombies* has only added to the confusion. The series brought back many familiar MCU actors, who voiced alternate versions of their characters living in a world overrun by a virus that turns people into zombies. This zombie-filled reality was first shown in season one of *What If…?*, episode five, titled “What If… Zombies?!”. That episode introduced a team of heroes whose story continues in the *Marvel Zombies* series, including the floating head of Ant-Man, voiced by Paul Rudd.

When the zombie outbreak began – triggered by Janet van Dyne returning from the Quantum Realm infected – Scott Lang’s body was lost, leaving only his head surviving inside a jar and wearing Doctor Strange’s levitating cloak. Interestingly, it isn’t Scott Lang who uses his Ant-Man abilities in *Marvel Zombies*; instead, we see zombified versions of Janet van Dyne and Hank Pym. The outbreak also causes some people in San Francisco to grow to enormous sizes due to the unpredictable nature of the zombie-powered size changes. This is surprising because it was previously believed that the Ant-Man suit was essential for safely altering one’s size.

The second episode of *Marvel Zombies* shows people growing to enormous sizes *before* turning into zombies, and they do so without any apparent negative effects. This is strange considering what we understand about Ant-Man’s size-changing abilities in the MCU. While *Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania* showed the Lang, Pym, and van Dyne family shrinking without their suits and entering the Quantum Realm, it was possible to believe this happened because of their experience with the technology or because Kang the Conqueror altered things. This new development in *Marvel Zombies* doesn’t fit with those previous explanations.

For over a decade, Marvel Studios has often created inconsistencies with how Ant-Man’s powers work, ever since Paul Rudd first appeared as the character in 2015. The explanation involving Pym Particles shrinking the space between atoms doesn’t quite add up – it’s hard to understand how the heroes can become smaller than atoms themselves to enter the Quantum Realm. Furthermore, the strength of Ant-Man and the Wasp when changing size is all over the place. If they maintain the same force as a normal-sized person when shrunk, then when they grow large, they should be incredibly weak, but that isn’t shown on screen.

Scott Lang didn’t have a major part in *Marvel Zombies*, and it’s unclear what happened to him after the Queen of the Dead succeeded. While Marvel hasn’t confirmed a second season yet, he could potentially return. Paul Rudd will reprise his role as Ant-Man in the live-action *Avengers: Doomsday* in 2026, teaming up with other Marvel heroes against Doctor Doom. Hopefully, the movie will offer more insight into his abilities, but it’s unlikely we’ll get many answers beforehand.
