I Fell In Love With Outlander: Blood Of My Blood Star Harriet Slater’s Premiere Look. Why She (Of Course) Went With Tartan

The captivating world of “Outlander” returns to Starz in the 2025 TV lineup, featuring the prequel spinoff titled “Blood of My Blood“. This new series transports viewers back through centuries, presenting parallel stories that intertwine in an intriguing manner.

In this fresh production, we encounter star-crossed lovers from the 18th century – Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie – portrayed by Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy. Additionally, the series introduces Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp as a married couple from the 20th century.

At the premiere, Harriet Slater donned a remarkable tartan skirt that instantly captured my heart before she revealed its significance. She plays Ellen in the series, while Brian is portrayed by Jamie Roy, making them the primary Scottish characters of the 18th-century narrative.

The cast of “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” had already begun filming Season 2 when they graced the red carpet for the Season 1 premiere. Notably, two stars not only donned elegant attire but also selected outfits that perfectly suited their characters. Jamie Roy, portraying Brian Fraser, opted for a striking black kilt. Harriet Slater, as Ellen MacKenzie, chose a flowing tartan skirt paired with a contemporary blouse. Remarkably, unlike an incident where paparazzi almost leaked a significant plot twist, the stars were fully prepared for the cameras on premiere night! Here’s a glimpse of Slater’s eye-catching skirt:

Anyone who watched the first two episodes of “Blood of My Blood,” featuring a fresh theme song, might already appreciate why the actress portraying Ellen chose to wear that specific plaid. However, you don’t need to be privy to all the spoilers for the new prequel to understand why her selection of tartan suits the world of “Outlander.” Prior to the “Blood of My Blood” premiere (with “Outlander” Season 8 yet to arrive), I had a chance to chat with Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy, and during our conversation, Harriet provided some insight regarding her choice of skirt.

I found myself deeply captivated by that particular design. The creator, Siobhan Mackenzie, is of Scottish origin, and interestingly enough, we both donned some of her creations. My choice was a tartan skirt bearing the Mackenzie clan’s name, which held extra significance as she herself is a Mackenzie designer. Wearing the Mackenzie tartan felt particularly meaningful because I portray a MacKenzie character in the series, making it quite special indeed.

At the premiere of “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” the English actress publicly acknowledged and praised both her Scottish character and a talented Scottish costume designer for their exceptional work. I’m certain many others were equally smitten. Jamie Roy, who wore one of Siobhan Mackenzie’s kilts, expressed his own sentiments upon seeing the attire for the first time.

At one of our gatherings, we found ourselves there side by side. Then, we noticed something interesting on a display. Initially, I caught sight of it and exclaimed, “She needs to wear that!” It seemed you already had the same thought in mind.

According to Siabhan Mackenzie’s Instagram account, Harriet Slater was wearing a “statement silk skirt crafted from Mackenzie tartan silk – a deliberate nod to her character – pleated from over ten metres of silk for effortless fluid movement.” For those of us on the American side of the pond, that’s more than thirty feet of silk! Slater went on:

When I saw that kilt displayed on a mannequin, high above me, my jaw dropped in awe. I stood there, gaping up at it, thinking “That’s the one.” Initially, I wasn’t sure if I could wear it, but then she happily agreed and custom-made the kilt especially for Jamie Roy.

While Jamie Roy’s kilt certainly wasn’t as voluminous as Slater’s skirt, a lot of thought went into it. The designer’s Instagram account sheds more light on how the custom look was “crafted in couture metallic houndstooth” that was “tailored into a modern kilt and reflected in flashes on kilt pins adorning a sleek black jacket and waistcoat.”

Although it deviated from the conventional tartan pattern, there was a valid explanation behind this, connected to what his co-stars mentioned about wearing a kilt daily during filming. Roy explained:

She bought me a modern kilt, not too traditionally styled since I wear one daily for work. As a contemporary Black Brian, the all-black ensemble felt fittingly stylish. [laughs]

In the universe of Outlander, he’s recognized as “Black Brian” due to his hair color instead of his tartan pattern. The initial appearance subtly acknowledged Brian Fraser, without the actor wearing the identical plaid worn on set.

The series “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” debuted with two consecutive episodes on August 8 at 8 p.m. ET on Starz, and it will continue to air new episodes each Friday. Since the story takes place in 18th century Scotland, it’s likely that no one will be looking particularly glamorous throughout the season, but we’ll have to wait and see.
