I Found The Thursday Murder Club Movie To Be Pretty Close To The Book, But There’s One Thing I Really Wish The Adaptation Had

When considering upcoming book adaptations, I often find myself hesitant due to the likelihood that a film or TV show may not capture the same level of detail and immersion as reading the original source material. Yet, there have been numerous instances where adaptations have matched or even surpassed the book’s enjoyment. Therefore, I usually set aside my doubts until I have watched both versions. Recently, I watched the “The Thursday Murder Club” movie on Netflix.

I Had A Blast Seeing Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club Adapted As A Movie

Last year, I picked up the first installment of Richard Osman’s “Thursday Murder Club” series in preparation for the upcoming movie, since we had some information about its release by then. Frankly, it had been a while since I read a mystery novel. The concept of a mystery book centered around an elderly club at a retirement home piqued my curiosity. As I understand, the “cozy” feel and joining Elizabeth, Ron, Joyce, and Ibrahim on their quest to solve the book’s mystery were aspects I found appealing.

Rather than the allure of the mystery alone, it was the captivating characters, particularly the latest addition to the club, Joyce, who kept me eagerly flipping through each page. Every now and then, the book offers glimpses into Joyce’s thoughts, as she has relocated to Coopers Chase after years of solitude following her husband’s death, a man who was her greatest source of love.

As an avid fan, I can’t help but share this exciting news! You now have the opportunity to own the entire collection of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club books on Amazon. Plus, his new series, We Solve Murders, is also available for just $56.99 – that’s a savings of $6 per novel! But, The Biggest Thing I Missed From The Book Was Joyce’s Perspective

In the recently released movie, predominantly set at a popular English countryside backdrop that had previously been used for X-Men productions, I noticed a similar pattern. While the intriguing mystery kept me engaged, and it closely adhered to its original source material, what stood out was the focus on the lives of four retirees – an uncommon narrative choice, especially with a star-studded cast like Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie, and Ben Kingsley. Instead, the emotional core of the film wasn’t centered around Joyce, but rather Elizabeth (played by Helen Mirren) and her husband Stephen (Jonathan Pryce).

In “The Thursday Murder Club,” Elizabeth, being the most dynamic and leading character, undeniably captures the limelight, which is quite logical. However, I found that certain emotional aspects from the source material were slightly diminished as the adaptation focused less on Joyce’s perspective. The narrative of her joining Coopers Chase and her involvement in the Thursday Murder Club significantly aided her in dealing with the loss of her husband, which adds depth to the story.

While delving into Joyce’s storyline in the book, it occurred to me how crucial community and emotional support can be for the elderly, who often face isolation, loneliness, and more hardships than other age groups. Let’s hope there are plans for sequels, allowing us to explore Joyce’s journey further in future films. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed witnessing the novel come to life on screen.
