Not all great live-action versions of animated films are carbon copies of the originals; instead, they dare to make unique choices and expand on the storyline. To tell you the truth, I’ve only been impressed by a handful of Disney’s live-action reboots because they often feel lifeless compared to their original counterparts. Unfortunately, I didn’t find Snow White as captivating as expected, but I acknowledge that it took risks that other live adaptations seemed hesitant to take.
In a slightly different wording, let me discuss an exceptional aspect of the Disney version of Snow White that stands out, despite her having both positive and negative traits.
Warning: Snow White spoilers are ahead. Proceed with caution.
I Love That Jonathan and Snow White’s Romance Doesn’t Follow The Original Story
In the classic tale of Snow White, she finds herself smitten with Prince Charming. Yet, the modern live-action spin adds a unique twist. A character called Jonathan (played by Andrew Burnap), who initially clashes with the Wicked Queen (Gal Gadot), is introduced. Typically, Disney princes are pivotal figures in the story, often embodying a tale of transformation from rags to riches as the handsome prince marries a common girl, transforming her into a princess. However, some Disney fairytales deviate from this formula.
Now, the live-action adaptation of “Snow White” has earned its place on that exclusive list. One of the film’s standout features is its stark contrast to the animated version, adding an element of surprise. The relationship between Jonathan and Snow is a fresh take, keeping me intrigued as to how it would unfold. Furthermore, I found myself captivated by the interplay of tension and witty dialogue between the romantic leads, a hallmark of many of my favorite romance movies, particularly romantic comedies.
At the onset of their bond, Jonathan and Snow share something special. As for Andrew Burnap, I wasn’t acquainted with his prior performances before joining the cast of “Snow White”; thus, this movie served as an engaging introduction to the actor himself. Rachel Zegler and Andrew have a captivating rapport within the film “Snow White.

I Think His Character Is Much More Interesting Than Just A Prince
While some might yearn for a chivalrous prince, I lean more towards love interests with an edgier charm. Far from being royal, Jonathan is a thief, a liar, and overly self-assured – much like Robin Hood. His dynamic with Snow White reminded me of the TV show “Once Upon a Time”, as his presence significantly alters the classic tale’s atmosphere.
This tale doesn’t adhere to the usual fairy tale conventions. In traditional fairy tales, a princess wouldn’t be smitten by a rogue. Instead, in many modern Disney adaptations, both animated and live-action, it’s the female characters who hold center stage. The princes are often included in these stories merely to emphasize the extraordinary nature of the heroine. Eventually, she ends up living blissfully ever after with her prince.
Jonathan, despite not being a prince, demonstrates that a princess or woman doesn’t necessarily require a traditional prince to find happiness. Instead, she could choose a non-conventional figure like a rebellious outlaw, or even choose solitude, and still achieve happiness.

I Enjoy How Jonathan and Snow White Inspire Each Other To Become Better Versions
Snow White’s perspective on the kingdom is somewhat innocent due to her restricted exposure to the world outside the castle. However, Jonathan forcefully enters her life in both a literal and metaphorical sense. He provokes her, which ultimately encourages her to step out of her comfort zone and grow into the princess and future queen she is destined to become.
Jonathan initially comes across as self-centered and despondent, but Snow helps him see the goodness in the world. They both positively impact each other’s growth. Over time, Jonathan transforms into a more compassionate and courageous individual, while Snow learns to be a stronger, more effective leader, inspired by Jonathon.
Snow and Jonathan share a common essence, but their methods for living life differ greatly. At their core, they both exhibit compassion and a desire to assist. Through their relationship, Jonathan and Snow inspire and motivate each other to reach their full potential. Many of my favorite fictional couples thrive because they help bring out the best in one another. Essentially, Jonathan and Snow serve as catalysts for the heroic transformations of one another.

Seeing Their Love Story Play Out, It Made Me Root For The True Love’s Kiss
The tale of Snow White concludes when the Wicked Queen offers her a tainted apple, causing her to fall asleep. Spontaneously, Prince Charming bestows a kiss upon her, and she revives. It is true love’s kiss that rescues Snow White. Despite the variations in the live-action remake, I was certain this scene would be retained in the movie.
In the timeless tale, it’s essential that Snow White’s slumber and subsequent awakening by Prince Jonathan is not overlooked. As the movie delves into their heartwarming romance, we eagerly wait for this pivotal moment when he rescues her and bestows a kiss. This scene serves as a climactic point in their relationship and is a classic romantic gesture – the first kiss shared between two characters blossoming with love.
The tale of Snow White doesn’t conclude merely with the kiss; there are further events following it. Instead, the story culminates in the wedding between Snow White and Jonathan. Although the kiss is significant and serves as a catalyst for the narrative progression, it plays an essential role that enhances the film’s appeal. For enthusiasts of the animated adaptation, this well-executed moment should be particularly satisfying.

I Enjoyed Snow And Jonathan’s Duets The Most Of All The Snow White Songs
Prior to watching the movie, I hadn’t come across many articles about Snow White. However, when I saw it, I was delightfully surprised by the abundance of original music in the film. Given that it’s a contemporary musical, this aspect demonstrates that the criticism regarding Rachel Zegler’s casting is unwarranted as she has ample opportunity to display her beautiful singing voice. She is indeed an ideal fit for leading this musical. Moreover, her voice harmonizes beautifully with Andrew Burnap’s when they sing duets together as Jonathan and Snow White.
In the style of many contemporary musicals, Snow White includes some catchy tunes that hit the mark, while others fall flat. “Princess Problems” is one such lively and playful number. It effectively highlights their differing characters yet subtly hints at their mutual attraction. It’s a delightful tune that features an endearing duet.
Their grand proclamation of love is encapsulated in the song titled ‘A Hand Meets A Hand.’ It beautifully showcases their harmonies, and it’s another delightful romantic number that I wouldn’t mind seeing them perform again in a movie. Zegler and Burnap’s voices complement each other wonderfully.
Give Snow White a watch on Disney+ this week! This movie’s updates have piqued my interest, making me wonder about the promising improvements we might see in future Disney productions.
