The final season of Stranger Things is coming in 2025, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all wraps up. However, there’s one thing I’m hoping doesn’t happen: I don’t want to see Nancy and Jonathan get engaged.
With the release of Volume 2 just under two weeks away, let’s dive in! Be warned: the following contains spoilers for Volume 1.

Vol. 1 Teases Jonathan Proposing To Nancy, And The Vibes Are Off For Me
If you missed it, a recent episode of Stranger Things 5 Volume 1 – specifically, “The Turnbow Trap” – revealed that Murray gave Jonathan a cassette tape containing an engagement ring. There was a brief conversation between them about whether it was a good time, and honestly, I wish I could tell Jonathan to ignore Murray and definitely don’t propose to Nancy right now! I really don’t want this romantic storyline to happen amidst everything else going on.
The kids on Stranger Things have been through so much together since the Upside Down appeared, and honestly, I care more about them protecting their town than about any romantic relationships. It’s especially frustrating to see Nancy and Jonathan being pushed as a couple right now, considering her parents are in the hospital and her sister is missing. If Jonathan tries to propose to Nancy with everything else going on, I might actually get upset!

At This Point, I’m So Over Nancy’s ‘Love Triangle’ And I Hope The Show Clocks That
I believe the show’s writers feel pressured to finally resolve the Nancy-Jonathan-Steve love triangle because fans have fixated on it for so long. But honestly, after nearly a decade of Stranger Things, it feels like a tired storyline. I’d much prefer the final season focus on character development and bringing the overarching story to a satisfying conclusion, rather than rehashing this romantic debate. The only couple I’m really rooting for at this point is Lucas and Max, especially with their touching storyline of him trying to wake her up with music.
Honestly, I’d be totally fine if Nancy ended up single by the end of the show. It feels like the love triangle with Steve and Jonathan has gone on for so long that it’s actually holding the characters back. Those scenes just feel…automatic, like the show is going through the motions. Remember Steve and Jonathan running up the radio tower? It didn’t really add anything new. It just doesn’t feel authentic anymore, and frankly, it’s not as engaging as it once was. Even Nancy seems like she’s moved past it all, and I’m kind of with her on that.
I understand that introducing an engagement ring creates extra tension right before the end of the season. It raises questions about who will find out and what discussions it will cause. While I hope the show builds a strong connection between Nancy and Jonathan if they’re getting married, it’s not something I’m particularly looking forward to when the next episodes of Stranger Things drop on Netflix – first on December 25th, and then for the New Year’s Eve finale.
