It’s hard to think of a 2025 film that’s generated more buzz than the critically acclaimed Sinners. Ryan Coogler’s vampire movie isn’t just a hit – it’s become a major part of pop culture. The film is fantastic, offering both intimate scenes and incredibly bold musical numbers that really shine on the big screen. I especially loved Coogler’s latest work, and I was surprised to find out that one of the actors actually persuaded him to keep one of my favorite scenes.
The cast of ‘Sinners’ is full of strong performances, but Delroy Lindo truly shines as Delta Slim, a seemingly comical, yet surprisingly complex, blues musician. Beneath the humor lies a tragic past, revealed in a poignant scene where Slim calls out to a chain gang, remembering his own imprisonment and the death of a friend at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan. Lindo recently shared with The Hollywood Reporter that much of this backstory was unfortunately cut from the final version.
Looking back, I realized the first version was significantly different. My scenes from the Chain Gang were gone. When Ryan asked for my thoughts, I just said, ‘Can we talk about this?’
Delta’s story about being recruited to play music for wealthy Southerners after being released from jail has moments of levity. But the scene quickly becomes deeply affecting as he recounts how the KKK falsely accused his friend of murder, leading to his lynching. Combined with Slim’s effort to offer encouragement to a passing chain gang – including Sammie and Elias “Stack” Moore – this creates one of the most emotionally powerful moments in Sinners, and it’s stayed with me long after watching it.

It was surprising to learn that Ryan Coogler’s first version of the film shortened Slim’s speech and cut the scene with the chain gang. However, Delroy Lindo thinks Coogler understood how impactful that part of the movie could be, and he explained why.
He definitely knew what he was doing, because he’s the one who brought me into this. We had a long conversation where I explained that the Chain Gang is a crucial part of [Delta Slim’s] backstory and fits perfectly with the overall narrative. I managed to explain to Ryan how it connects to the character’s struggles with self-medication, and thankfully, he agreed to put it back in.
Currently, the actor who played Malcolm X isn’t just happy with how the scene has been restored. He’s also thrilled that audiences, like me, are responding to it so positively.
It’s really rewarding to know that the emotional conversation in the car connected with viewers. The fact that I had that discussion with him, and then separately learned other actors had expressed similar thoughts – it wasn’t a planned thing, they all came to the same conclusion independently – speaks volumes. It feels incredibly genuine, and that’s a testament to Ryan. He’s a fantastic leader and the creative force that brought us all together.
This scene is just a taste of the incredible work Delroy Lindo did in ‘Sinners,’ which is getting a lot of awards attention – including Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice nominations. It’s frustrating that he hasn’t been recognized by the bigger awards groups yet, but I’m hopeful that will change. Even if he doesn’t win any awards, I know his powerful performance, including this entire monologue, will be remembered for a long time.
