Robert Downey Jr. will rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday” next year. His return is significant since he’s often credited for the success of the MCU – if the initial Iron Man movie hadn’t been successful, we might not be where we are today. It’s fascinating to think about how well that first film did, considering they were essentially figuring things out as they went along during production.
As a self-proclaimed movie buff, I can’t help but sing the praises of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark – a character that effortlessly exudes coolness within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of the many reasons he stands out is his frequent donning of sunglasses, a style accessory he sports more than most of his Avengers comrades. Interestingly enough, it seems these shades serve a dual purpose, as they were not only meant to enhance his stylish image but also to conceal a secret – according to Downey Jr., in one crucial scene, he wore them to discreetly read his lines during filming, as revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair.
In this scene, he performs a weapon test while pondering aloud, “Is it more beneficial to be feared or respected? Is it too ambitious to desire both?” As we filmed, Jon Favreau and I were literally crafting these lines as we went along. To make it look like I was reading from cue cards, I put on sunglasses.
It’s uncertain if Tony Stark’s frequent use of sunglasses stemmed entirely from this particular scene or not. It might have been for the same reason, but it wouldn’t be unexpected if that was the case. If Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t initially meant to wear sunglasses in a daytime desert scene, then why does he wear them in so many other scenes?
Previously, I had not encountered this particular explanation, but it’s quite logical and intriguing that such a concept was necessary. For a franchise renowned for its meticulous character and film connections, it’s surprising to learn that the first Iron Man wasn’t initially planned out thoroughly.
The achievement of the film’s success, along with the subsequent franchise, is even more impressive given the circumstances. Without a clear strategy, the risk of error definitely increases. Given the immense scale of the “Avengers: Doomsday” ensemble, it’s highly unlikely that they’ve improvised their roles. Nonetheless, fans are eagerly anticipating Robert Downey Jr.’s return, although with his Doctor Doom mask, he might forego wearing sunglasses this time around.
