Ryan Reynolds has often talked about the actors he looked up to growing up, and John Candy is always near the top of his list. Reynolds admired Candy so much that he produced a documentary about the comedian, called *I Like Me*. He’s also honored Candy’s memory by including hidden references, or ‘Easter eggs,’ to him in the *Deadpool* movies. I hadn’t noticed all of these tributes before, but learning about them is really heartwarming.
I was fascinated by a recent conversation with Ryan Reynolds on *Late Night with Seth Meyers*. It turns out Reynolds subtly honored the late John Candy throughout the *Deadpool* movies, and I’m kicking myself for never noticing! Apparently, he included a nod to Candy’s character, Del Griffith, from *Planes, Trains and Automobiles* – specifically, the book Del reads in the film, *The Canadian Mounted*. Reynolds snuck a shot of Wade Wilson reading that very same book into the second *Deadpool* movie. It’s a clever tribute, and I’m glad Meyers brought it to light.
The movie *Planes* isn’t the only nod to other films hidden in Marvel movies. I was surprised to discover, after watching a YouTube interview with the filmmakers, that the beat-up 1983 Chrysler LeBaron convertible from *Planes* also makes an appearance in *Deadpool & Wolverine*. You can spot it while Deadpool and Wolverine are traveling through The Void – look for it in the bottom right corner of the image below.

Okay, I have to admit, I totally missed that car in one scene – and I pride myself on spotting details! Apparently, the filmmakers had to cleverly rename it the ‘Grand Detroit’ to avoid any legal trouble, as Robert Reynolds pointed out on Late Night. Beyond that, if you’re a fan of *Planes, Trains and Automobiles*, keep an eye out for a few more nods to that classic, including a quick appearance by *The Canadian Mounted*.
As a huge movie fan, I found it fascinating to hear Ryan Reynolds talk about the connection between ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’. He pointed out that Deadpool has this really heartfelt moment with Wolverine that reminds me a lot of Del Griffith’s iconic “I like me” speech. And get this – Wolverine totally lays into Wade Wilson in a way that echoes Neal Page’s frustrated rant at Del. Reynolds even said Logan basically *destroys* Wade with his words, and honestly, that’s exactly right! It’s a clever little nod to a classic, and I can’t wait to see it play out.

Steve Martin shared two surefire ways John Candy always managed to make him laugh, even when they were having a tough time filming the movie *Planes, Trains and Automobiles*.
Ryan Reynolds paid tribute to his friend and colleague, John Candy, with fun candy references in the *Deadpool* movies. But his new documentary, directed by Colin Hanks, is an even more heartfelt tribute. Reynolds and Hanks clearly put a lot of passion into the film, working with Candy’s children to create a touching and emotional celebration of his life and legacy.
It’s interesting how the *Deadpool* movies feel extra special knowing they include so many nods to John Candy. It’s hard to believe it’s been over 30 years since we lost his amazing comedic talent. Thankfully, his influence continues through his family and fans, like Ryan Reynolds, who still celebrate his work.
You can watch the documentary *John Candy: I Like Me* with a Prime Video subscription. And if you want to see all three *Deadpool* movies, you’ll need a Disney+ subscription.
