It’s not surprising that so many well-known and successful franchises are getting new installments, reboots, or revivals. This summer, one of the most famous horror series got a new sequel that continues the story of the original films.
Although the film series is popular with a dedicated fanbase, it’s never been a critical darling, and the latest installment continued that trend, earning mixed reactions from both reviewers and viewers. Despite this, the movie quickly became a success after its release on Netflix on October 17th, according to data from FlixPatrol.
The new horror film, *I Know What You Did Last Summer*, quickly became popular after its release, reaching the sixth spot on U.S. streaming charts. While it’s not available on Netflix outside of the U.S., it recently launched on HBO Max in several countries and immediately became a hit. It topped the charts in Colombia and landed in the top two in both Chile and Venezuela.
Beyond its success on streaming, *I Know What You Did Last Summer* also drew viewers on platforms where people rent or buy movies digitally. Before it even premiered on Netflix, the horror sequel ranked tenth in the U.S. on Amazon VOD, and it was also popular in several European countries including Poland, Belgium, and the Netherlands. It also performed well on iTunes in various African countries.
The 2025 film *I Know What You Did Last Summer* is the fourth movie in the series, and it’s both a continuation of the original story and a fresh start. It features a new group of friends haunted by a secret from their past, while also bringing back three actors from the earlier films.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for creating *Sweet/Vicious* and directing *Do Revenge*, helmed the latest installment. It reunited Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., and even featured a brief appearance by the late Helen Shivers (through a dream sequence). The director had hoped to include another actor, but wasn’t able to, and they only received a mention in the credits.
This season features a group of five friends instead of the original four. The cast includes Chase Sui Wonders (known from *The Studio*), playing Ava Brucks, Madelyn Cline (*Outer Banks*) as Danica Richards, Tyriq Withers (*HIM*) as Teddy Spencer, Jonah Hauer-King (*A Dog’s Way Home*) as Milo Griffin, and Sarah Pidgeon (*The Wilds*) as Stevie Ward.
I Know What You Did Last Summer Received Mixed Reviews
The new horror film, *I Know What You Did Last Summer*, initially received a 46% rating from critics, which is generally considered negative. Surprisingly, this was actually better than the original 1997 film’s initial score of 45%. But as more reviews were published, the film’s rating dropped, ultimately landing at 36% based on over 200 reviews.
Despite its mixed reception, *I Know What You Did Last Summer* pleased audiences enough to earn a 68% approval rating – the highest in the franchise. This positive response translated into strong ticket sales, with the film earning $63.3 million worldwide on an $18 million budget, resulting in a significant profit for Sony Pictures. The film has continued to perform well through on-demand rentals and now on streaming platforms.
I Know What You Did Last Summer is streaming on Netflix.
