As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must confess that the news about the reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” has me both intrigued and apprehensive. The original was a staple of my late ’90s horror movie nights, and the thought of seeing the fisherman back in action is a chilling prospect indeed.
Today, Sony officially announced that the remake of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is now underway, as hinted by a telling image featuring an eerily familiar arm. Recall the fisherman character from the original movie, who goes by the name Ben? In the storyline, Julie, Barry, Helen, and Ray inadvertently hit him with their car and believe he’s dead. However, they were wrong – very wrong! When summer returns, he comes back to haunt them as a relentless stalker. Throughout the series, he manages to elude death or return from beyond the grave.
Initially, the scene portrays an individual in a gritty, old-fashioned room, holding a hook with their left hand while a CRT monitor is nearby. This setup suggests that filming has commenced. The upcoming remake will feature Freddie Prinze Jr., reprising his role as Ray, and Jennifer Love Hewitt is being considered to return as Julie. Contrary to fan speculation, there won’t be any magical voodoo associated with the character of Helen, as Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played that role, has clarified on Instagram: “I am deceased.
A number of rising talents are involved in this venture, among them Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who recently appeared on Season 2 of Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters” and Hulu’s “Grotesquerie.” Additionally, Madelyn Cline from “Outer Banks” and “Knives Out: A Glass Onion Story,” as well as Jonah Haur-King from “The Little Mermaid,” are also part of the team. The cast also includes Billy Campbell, Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Lola Tung, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette.
Despite the current lack of specifics about the plot, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (known for “Do Revenge”) has reassured fans that the previous films are considered canonical and will not disregard their events to avoid creating larger plot inconsistencies. Leah McKendrick is working on the initial draft of the screenplay.
The initial movie, which shares its title with a novel by Lois Duncan, performed moderately well at the box office, earning over $125 million. In contrast, the second film underperformed significantly, managing only $40 million in earnings. By the time the third film came out in 2006, it was released straight to DVD. An attempt was made to reintroduce the concept for a newer audience on Prime Video, featuring Madison Iseman, Sebastian Amoruso, Ashley Moore, Brianna Tju, and Ezekiel Goodman. Unfortunately, this series only lasted one season before it was canceled.
I Know What You Did Last Summer slashes into theaters on July 18, 2025.
