In a fresh take on the classic horror film “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” a new installment has been released, reflecting the recent wave of legacy sequels within the genre. The plot revolves around a group of young individuals, who inadvertently stir up a past mistake that returns to torment them, this time by an ominous figure wielding a hook and donning a fisherman’s attire. To their advantage, they receive assistance from those who have previously encountered the same predicament: Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.). However, the reappearance of Ray and Julie in the storyline deviates from what both they and the audience anticipate, creating an intriguing foundation for future developments.
WARNING: SPOILERS!
In the reboot of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’, the closing credits contain a final, unexpected plot twist – much like in a Marvel or DC film. This surprise ending serves as a hint for the upcoming installments of the series.
I Know What You Did Last Summer Mid-Credits Scene Explained: She Still Knows
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, let me share my take on the thrilling twist in the IKWYDLS reboot: The denouement takes an earth-shattering (perhaps shattering?) turn when it’s disclosed that Ray Bronson has assumed the role of the new Fisherman Killer. His bar’s young employee, Stevie (played by Sarah Pidgeon), had become his disciple after she discovered her boyfriend was left to die on the road the previous summer. The revelations unfold in two acts: Ava Brooks (Chase Sui Wonders) and Danica Richards (Madelyn Cline) find themselves on a yacht with Stevie, believing they’re escaping danger, only to discover that Stevie had led them into a trap. The confrontation narrows down to a fierce battle between Ava and Stevie, with Danica seemingly meeting her demise; however, Ava is miraculously rescued by Ray, who seemingly shoots Stevie fatally, causing her to plummet off the boat.
In a surprising turn of events, Ray reveals to Ava that he didn’t truly kill Stevie, instead intending to continue the legacy of the Fisherman Killer. The final chapter also reveals that Stevie remains at large, which causes Julie James significant concern. No longer content with merely teaching about her trauma as a professor, Julie decides to revisit an old friend: Karla (Brandy Norwood). It turns out that Karla is living peacefully with her partner, but upon learning about Ray’s murder spree on the news, she becomes curious and asks Julie: “Who do we have to take down now?
Since I Know What You Did Last Summer is a sequel continuing an earlier story, it’s only natural that this new chapter would set up future events. Although it’s unclear whether the closing scene should be taken literally (as this series often includes scenes at the end that are later disregarded), it’s satisfying for long-time fans to see Julie and Karla continuing their struggle in this installment.
I Know What You Did Last Summer is now in theaters.
