I Know What You Did Last Summer Star Claims “I Never Lied” About Surprise Return for Reboot

WARNING: Spoilers below for this year’s I Know What You Did Last Summer

In a fresh take on the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” series, Sony has brought back the original cast members Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., playing Julie James and Ray Bronson. Prior to the movie’s premiere, fans pondered if other franchise actors like Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, or Brandy Norwood would make a comeback. When asked about rejoining her husband for the reboot, Gellar clarified that her character, Helen Shivers, had perished in the initial film, stating “I’m dead.” It came as a shock when Gellar appeared in the reboot’s dream sequence. However, as Gellar herself explained on Instagram, she didn’t deceive fans – her character remains definitively deceased.

Warning: Spoilers! Helen Shivers remains deceased, and Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed this when asked about appearing in the latest ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ film. She always responded, ‘I am dead.’ However, creators Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Sam Lansky proposed a wild dream sequence with Madelyn Cline that made it possible for her to be part of the movie. It’s amazing we managed to keep this secret.

Back in 1997, I was utterly captivated by Sarah Michelle Gellar’s electrifying portrayal of Helen Shivers in “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” She shared the screen with Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Ryan Phillippe. The chilling character of Benjamin Willis, played by Muse Watson (who later graced our screens in “Prison Break” and “NCIS”), was a vengeful Fisherman who meted out justice to Gellar’s character following a cover-up of an accidental manslaughter by a group of teen friends. In the recent reboot, it’s me, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who returns as Helen in a haunting dream sequence featuring Madelyn Cline as Danica Richards. This nightmare scene unfolds after Danica is apprehended by the police and depicts Helen holding the hook, preparing to exact her vengeance on Danica for the death of Wyatt. This chilling sequence leaves Danica tormented with self-doubt and fear.

After its debut weekend, Sony’s remake of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” has earned $25.04 million globally so far. The initial film made an impressive $72.5 million worldwide, which sparked a franchise that included “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” in 1998 and the straight-to-video “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer”. The franchise also had a TV series on Prime Video in 2021, but it was only one season long. At this point, Sony has not yet confirmed plans for a sequel to their “I Know What You Did Last Summer” remake.

The initial film was orchestrated by director Jim Gillespie, following a script penned by Kevin Williamson, based on a novel by Lois Duncan. Conversely, the remake was masterminded by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, in collaboration with Sam Lansky and Leah McKendrick for the screenplay.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is now playing in theaters.
