H.G. Wells’ classic science fiction novel, ‘War of the Worlds,’ is renowned for its depiction of a Martian invasion on Earth. This influential book has been reimagined multiple times throughout history. The latest interpretation is a new movie available to stream with a Prime Video subscription, featuring Ice Cube in the cast. While it might not be the most exceptional film ever made, according to you.
To put it plainly, let me tell you that the latest version of “War of the Worlds” isn’t particularly impressive. If you’re hoping for a cinematic rendition true to H.G. Wells’ book, you might be disappointed. The film, in fact, deviates significantly from the original novel. It could be described more accurately as an adaptation of another adaptation that is widely recognized as one of the most iconic versions of “War of the Worlds” ever created. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not the movie directed by Steven Spielberg I’m referring to.
Prime Video’s War Of The Words Is A Modern Version Of Orson Welles’ Classic Adaptation
The latest adaptation of “War of the Worlds,” titled a screenlife movie, follows in the footsteps of recent productions such as “Searching” and “Missing.” Instead of traditional settings, this film unfolds exclusively on a computer desktop, belonging to Ice Cube’s character who portrays a Department of Homeland Security employee. This man is tasked with monitoring American citizens. The concept is innovative, serving as a tribute to the 1938 “War of the Worlds” production by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater.
The broadcast, you heard, was indeed a radio show. It began with a musical number that was suddenly disrupted by what sounded like a breaking news report. The announcer shared intriguing updates about astronomers observing mysterious blasts on Mars. As the story unfolded further via more news flashes, we came to know that extraterrestrial spacecraft had touched down worldwide, and subsequently, they unveiled, causing destruction.
Many people who joined the broadcast later and missed the introduction assumed authenticly that aliens had indeed invaded Earth, causing widespread panic. Although some accounts may be exaggerated or false, there’s no denying that the program’s design added an extra layer of realism to the experience.
Having encountered Orson Welles and “War of the Worlds” on a cassette tape during a camping trip decades ago, which eventually led me to watch “Citizen Kane,” I’ve grown particularly fond of that adaptation. The thought of creating a contemporary take on that story piqued my interest, but unfortunately, it doesn’t translate well in practice.

Unfortunately, The Modern Movie’s Gimmick Doesn’t Work Like It Did In 1938
It’s quite clear that a great deal of thought was put into designing the latest adaptation of “War of the Worlds”. If one were to create a contemporary version reminiscent of Orson Welles’ broadcast, the initial step would be to swap the communication method of 1938 (radio) with the communication method prevalent in 2025 (the internet).
In a simpler, more conversational way, The issue is that the screenlife format, although intriguing in other movies, doesn’t function similarly to how a scripted radio broadcast does. The success of Orson Welles’ ‘War of the Worlds’ production by The Mercury Theater lies in its ability to immerse the audience in the story, making them feel like they’re experiencing real news or part of the events unfolding.
In the realm of screenlife movies, I find myself immersed in narratives where the internet is pivotal, yet it never quite feels as if I’m partaking in the unfolding events. For instance, peering into Ice Cube’s office desktop through some digital means wasn’t something I actively participated in. The illusion of reality seems to elude us; we’re still spectators watching a film.
An alien invasion portrayed via a sequence of social media updates might resonate more as a contemporary equivalent to radio broadcasts, albeit with its own set of story-building hurdles to overcome.
Despite its flaws, the latest adaptation of “War of the Worlds” attempted something fresh and unique, which I must admit, is commendable.
