For many years, Game Freak has been closely associated with the Pokémon series, and for good reason – they’ve developed every main Pokémon game since the original Pokémon Red and Green in 1996. While they’ve often collaborated with Nintendo on various projects, Game Freak isn’t actually owned by Nintendo. This independence allows them to work with other companies, and they’re currently developing a new game called Beast of Reincarnation with a different publisher.
Many Pokémon fans haven’t been happy with recent games, and Game Freak, the company that makes them, has faced criticism. That’s why it was surprising to many when they learned Game Freak was also the studio behind Beast of Reincarnation. After years of associating the company with the distinctive look of Pokémon games, the more realistic 3D style of Beast of Reincarnation came as a bit of a shock. Despite this, I’m really looking forward to seeing what the game offers.
Pokemon Has Fallen Into a Pattern that Seems Hard to Break

Honestly, for me and a lot of other players, the Pokemon games looked their absolute best on the DS. Since then, the move to 3D just hasn’t really clicked. I keep seeing people joke about how flat the trees and buildings look in the newer games, and it’s kinda true! Scarlet & Violet were the first open-world Pokemon games, which was cool, but the performance issues were a real letdown. Everyone’s hoping Game Freak and The Pokemon Company will seriously improve the graphics in the next generation, but after seeing how things have gone, I’m not even sure what a big graphical leap would look like for Pokemon at this point.
The Pokemon series has always had a distinct cartoon look, and it’s been that way since the start. Changing to a more realistic style, similar to what you see in Beast of Reincarnation, would feel strange. We could certainly have more detailed effects, like flames that look like actual fire and windows that appear three-dimensional, but the franchise feels stuck in a rut. This isn’t just about the graphics, or even the fact that the characters don’t have voice actors; it’s a more general sense of stagnation.
I’ve been a Pokémon fan since childhood, and my collection reflects that – from classic Eeveelutions to newer Pokémon like Lechonk. However, the core gameplay – leaving home, catching Pokémon, battling, and repeating – hasn’t evolved much over the years. While Scarlet & Violet tried something different, the reaction from fans was mixed. I appreciated the added activities beyond gym challenges, but even I found the open world a little bare at times. It’s tough to figure out what Pokémon fans want from the next generation, with some longing for the classic formula and others feeling it’s become predictable. That’s why I’m excited about the possibility of Game Freak creating a large-scale RPG that isn’t tied to the Pokémon brand.
I Might Be More Excited for Beast of Reincarnation Than Pokemon Gen 10

I’m really excited for the next Pokémon game, don’t get me wrong. However, after so many generations, the idea of catching every Pokémon can get a little repetitive. I’m hoping for a great main series game with Generation 10, but I’m actually even more interested to see what Game Freak creates with Beast of Reincarnation.
It’s been a long time since the studio released a big console game that wasn’t related to Pokemon. They’ve made some mobile games, like Pandoland and Pocket Card Jockey, but those had a different, cartoonish style. That style wasn’t quite like Pokemon, and it’s very different from what we’ve seen in the previews for Beast of Reincarnation. Honestly, this new game looks like it could be the best of both worlds – combining Game Freak’s strengths with Pokemon, but with a much more advanced visual style that the Pokemon franchise probably won’t ever adopt.
Beast of Reincarnation tells the story of a lonely outsider and their close relationship with an animal companion. They team up to face challenges together, and Game Freak wants to deeply explore this connection in a fresh way. The game appears to have a more mature and detailed story, with a protagonist who actively shapes events instead of just following instructions. As Game Freak’s first major RPG that isn’t a Pokémon game, it promises to showcase a different side of the developer and their collaborators.
We don’t have a firm release date for Beast of Reincarnation yet, but the recent Xbox Partner Direct gave us a good look at gameplay. It’s planned to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S later in 2024, and I’m excited to see what this unique action RPG—featuring a woman and her dog—brings to the table.
