Revisiting The Fantastic Four: First Steps on Disney+ really highlights how significant Stan Lee’s vision for the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been. As the creative force behind so many beloved Marvel characters and stories, it’s no surprise that Stan Lee made memorable appearances in many MCU films.
As a huge Marvel fan, I always loved how Marvel Studios treated Stan Lee, letting him have a blast with all his fun cameos. It’s amazing that even after he passed away, they continue to include him in the MCU – and with The Fantastic Four: First Steps now on Disney+, revisiting the movie really made me appreciate his appearance even more. It’s a sweet way to keep his memory alive.
Stan Lee Has A Special Cameo In The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Stan Lee won’t appear in the new Fantastic Four movie as archival footage, a CGI recreation, or even as the face of another character. Instead, Marvel Studios has cast an actor, Greg Haiste, to portray a young Stan Lee in the film, titled The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Martin Dickinson portrays a young Jack Kirby in this scene. The creative partnership between Stan Lee and Jack Kirby was essential to Marvel Comics’ success. It’s significant that the MCU is now giving Kirby major recognition, especially considering he passed away in 1994, long before the MCU began, and therefore couldn’t make cameo appearances like Stan Lee.
In “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” we see Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer arrives in New York City, closely followed by Joseph Quinn’s Human Torch. The film pays tribute to Lee and Kirby’s creation of the Fantastic Four, showing them working in their office, complete with the original Timely Comics logo and comic book artwork.
Why Stan Lee’s New MCU Cameo Hit Harder For Me When Rewatching The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Seeing Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s cameo in The Fantastic Four: First Steps was already a touching moment when I first watched it in theaters, especially because the film’s 1960s style matched the era when they originally created the comic book. But rewatching the movie on Disney+ and understanding what they were doing in that scene, along with the story behind it, made their appearance even more meaningful.
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby paused their work to watch the Silver Surfer and the Human Torch. The moment perfectly captured the creators witnessing their characters come to life. It’s especially sad that, considering Stan Lee’s enthusiasm for seeing Marvel stories adapted, he and Jack Kirby weren’t able to see The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
The movie does a great job of capturing the spirit of the original Fantastic Four characters and stories created by Lee and Kirby. It’s a touching tribute that Lee and Kirby aren’t here to see it themselves, and the cameo feels genuinely heartfelt. This cameo is more meaningful and personal than some of Stan Lee’s bigger appearances in other Marvel movies, which makes The Fantastic Four: First Steps truly special.
