While Saturday Night Live often makes news with its current political humor and celebrity impressions, the show’s true strength lies in its consistently quirky and original comedy. Some of its most memorable sketches aren’t about what’s happening today, but feature unique characters in everyday situations or send-ups of older movies and TV shows. A recent example is the Christmas episode, where a parody of the 1990 film Home Alone quickly became the most popular sketch of the night.
Because the recent parody was so popular, Saturday Night Live released a behind-the-scenes video showing how the sketch was made. It highlights the incredible amount of work involved – from the set and costumes to special effects – and how important it is to have the host’s full cooperation.
Being the host seems simple, but Saturday Night Live’s history shows it’s actually quite challenging. The sketches that make it to air are usually the ones the host really connects with and actively participates in. People on the inside said they were relieved and happy with her positive reaction – she didn’t just agree to the sketch, she wanted to make it even better.
Ariana expressed a desire for a lot of fake blood to be used, saying she wanted to resemble the character Carrie at the conclusion of the project.
The three-minute behind-the-scenes video gives a fantastic look at all the work that went into creating the sketch. It covers everything from having to custom-make a green bathrobe – since they couldn’t find one in stores – to carefully recreating the original movie’s set and camera angles. The video also reveals how Colin Jost noticed his resemblance to Buzz and decided he was the perfect person to play the role.
You can watch the video in all its glory below…
The “Home Alone” sketch is the newest in a series created by Mikey Day and Colin Jost that reimagines well-known movies with more violence. While their “Dead Poets Society” sketch is particularly popular, this “Home Alone” version has already gained over three million views in just a few weeks and is continuing to grow. It seems likely this sketch will become a fan favorite, as people are enjoying its clever writing and the cast’s performances.
Saturday Night Live is currently on break for the holidays, but it’s coming back next week with Finn Wolfhard from the hit show Stranger Things. After that, Teyana Taylor from One Battle After Another and Alexander Skarsgard will appear in episodes later in the month. I’m really looking forward to it!
