
Many families probably have their own holiday traditions, but my wife and I always watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation every year. For the past 13 Christmases, we’ve made it a point to cozy up by the fireplace – except for those two years when we didn’t have one – and enjoy watching Clark Griswold’s hilarious holiday mishaps.
My parents were visiting, so we all gathered to watch the Vacation movies together. It was a full house – my parents, my wife, our three kids, plus a lot of pets! We had our two dogs, my in-laws’ dog who was staying with us, two cats, and even a goldfish. It felt like Cousin Eddy’s RV – completely packed with people and animals, and wonderfully chaotic!

Between Parents, Kids, Dogs, And Cats, A Lot Was Going On
I recently watched National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation with my family after a particularly chaotic day. It was the busiest Saturday of the year, capped off with a cookie party and a late spaghetti dinner. By the time we sat down to watch the movie, the kids were completely wired and exhausted from sugar, the dogs were squabbling over scraps, and the cats were desperate to get outside. I was attempting to tidy up while my dad enthusiastically pointed out all the talented character actors in the film.
I’ve seen this movie so many times over the years, it’s practically part of me! Honestly, it’s easy to get lost in everything that happens. I might miss a little detail here and there, or be a beat late with a famous line, but that just shows how much is packed into it. It really feels like a lot is always happening, and it’s amazing!

But The Chaos Of A Full House Made The Experience All The Better
Thankfully, everything stayed relatively calm – the dogs behaved, the cats left the Christmas lights alone, and I avoided any unwanted gifts. Despite the usual holiday chaos of watching Christmas Vacation with a large group, it actually made the experience more fun. Instead of the movie’s awkward attic scene, our gathering felt more like the joyful dance party at the end of the film.
Watching this classic Christmas movie recently was surprisingly wonderful, even with all the noise and excitement. It was a truly memorable experience that I’ll cherish for a long time.
Watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation with my parents instantly brought back childhood memories and made me feel like a kid again. The movie – with its squabbling siblings, mischievous pets, and unexpected guests – really reminded me of my own family experiences. To me, the film perfectly captures the chaotic but loving spirit of family and the holidays.
