Gary Oldman has shown exceptional talent throughout his illustrious career, not just in prestigious films but also in genre productions. His portrayal of Commissioner Gordon in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is often discussed by fans, yet it seems that his most talked-about role is actually from another franchise: playing Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series.
Harry Potter is a beloved global franchise, so perhaps this shouldn’t be so surprising. The eight-movie franchise, which is streaming with a Max subscription, features a stellar adult cast, including Oldman. During an interview with ET, he was asked if he gets stopped by fans about Sirius. He responded resoundingly, offering:
Of course! Yes! If I’m presented a photo to sign more often than not it’s a Sirius Black picture.
In simpler terms, it’s no secret that many people adore Sirius Black as Harry Potter’s godfather. He’s a beloved character within the Harry Potter universe, and this affection hasn’t waned over time. Although Gary Oldman filmed his scenes long ago, the enduring charm of the Wizarding World continues to captivate fans, resulting in some still approaching him for autographs of his iconic character.

Reflecting on the role, Oldman expressed regret that he featured in just a handful of Harry Potter films. Much like in the novels, Sirius makes an appearance in The Prisoner of Azkaban and meets his demise at the hands of Bellatrix Lestrange in Order of the Phoenix. Technically speaking, he was only present in four movies, with some of those appearances being brief cameos. He mused about his short-lived portrayal of Sirius, saying:
I think I left too early. I arrived late and left too early.
Gary Oldman juggled filming both the “Harry Potter” series and the “Dark Knight” trilogy nearly simultaneously, keeping the 67-year-old actor consistently engaged in portraying two cherished fictional heroes. In a delightful exchange with fans, Oldman creatively merged these iconic roles. As he put it:
*Gary Oldman played both Harry Potter and The Dark Knight at nearly the same time, making him a busy man acting out two beloved characters from fiction.*
In an amusing fan encounter, Oldman artfully blended his performances as these legendary figures. In his own words:
Once, a child approached me and asked, ‘What lies beyond the curtain?’ Since my experience with death made it seem as if I was passing through a barrier, I replied, ‘I’d say Batman.’
One heart-wrenching instance in the Harry Potter series is Sirius Black’s demise, given his possible role as a mentor for the Boy Who Lived. Fans have often pondered over the veil, and I admire how Oldman incorporated Batman into the conversation about it.
The Harry Potter series could be considered one of the most successful book-to-film adaptations, but the Dark Knight Trilogy is universally recognized as exceptional superhero films. One factor that contributes to their success is Michael Oldman’s portrayal of Gordon, who I find to be my preferred live-action interpretation of the character. However, it’s hard to ignore the enduring appeal of the magical universe created in Harry Potter.
On HBO Max, you can stream both “Harry Potter” and “The Dark Knight” movies. As for the upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series, we’ll have to wait and find out who will be cast as Sirius Black.
