While Batman costumes appear costly when filming, they can sell for surprisingly high prices at auction. Recently, Adam West’s original costumes from the 1966 Batman series were sold for nearly $1 million, a price that exceeded the amount paid for Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman suit.
Batman TV show suits get sold for almost $1 million
On October 24th, Heritage Auctions sold the ‘Television Treasures Collection,’ a remarkable gathering of TV memorabilia collected by Dr. Stewart Berkowitz. The auction featured famous costumes from popular shows like Star Trek, Happy Days, and Batman.
The most valuable items at the auction were costumes from the 1966 Dark Knight television series. Batman’s suit, worn by Adam West, and Robin’s suit, worn by Burt Ward, together sold for $575,000.
Cesar Romero’s iconic purple Joker suit sold for an impressive $212,000. Yvonne Craig’s Batgirl costume also did very well, fetching $87,500. Costumes from Julie Newmar as Catwoman and Burgess Meredith as the Penguin were also popular with collectors, selling for $68,750 and $46,250, respectively.
The Batman suits alone sold for a surprising $989,500. Adding in other items – the Batcave’s Batscanner ($150,000) and a Batarang with holster ($50,000) – brought the total value of all the Batman memorabilia over $1 million.
Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman costume from the original 1975-79 TV show sold for $225,000 – a striking difference. The outfit included the famous red, white, and blue corset, along with Wonder Woman’s golden bracelets and Lasso of Truth.
The auction also featured iconic costumes, including two of Henry Winkler’s leather jackets from “Happy Days,” selling for $87,500 and $75,000. William Shatner’s Captain Kirk costumes from “Star Trek” fetched $62,500 and $52,500, while Barbara Eden’s famous pink harem costume from “I Dream of Jeannie” sold for $42,500. These were just a few of the many items sold.
Dr. Stewart Berkowitz, a dedicated collector and frequent seller on eBay, sadly passed away in 2024 at the age of 64.
