Iconic Doctor Who companion reveals his picks to play the next Doctor – including Riot Women star

Arthur Darvill, known for his role in Doctor Who, has shared his ideas for who should play the next Doctor, and he thinks Andy Pryor would be a great choice!

The season 15 finale, ‘The Reality War,’ featured a surprising transformation: Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor changed into Billie Piper’s character. Fans expect this unexpected twist to be clarified in the upcoming Christmas special.

Despite appearing as the Doctor, Piper hasn’t been officially acknowledged as the new Doctor, leaving fans and even former co-star Darvill to question what her actual role is.

I was reading an interview with Arthur Darvill, who played Rory, and he thinks it would be amazing if Billie Piper came back as the Doctor. He was chatting with TopMob’s Doctor Who Insiders and also shared a few ideas about what they should look for if they decide to go with a different actor for the role.

He suggested a couple of people who would be great for the job, mentioning Lorraine Ashbourne and Nick Mohammed by name.

He jokingly suggested Alan Carr would be a great choice, explaining he was currently enjoying the show Traitors and it was on his mind.

He suggested David Threlfall would be a fantastic choice, adding that there are many other talented actors, and specifically mentioned Mawaan Rizwan as being incredible.

And, of course, with a new Doctor must also come a new companion.

You know, someone asked me if I had any advice for the next person to play the part, and I just told them to have fun with it. Honestly, being on that show was a real gift, and I think anyone taking it on should just enjoy the experience.

I often find myself thinking about this because it’s a truly wild concept. It’s very much in the science fiction realm, incredibly detailed, and boasts its own internal logic, established rules, and a passionate fanbase. It’s a particularly unique kind of British TV show.

He explained that this is unique because it successfully combines the appeal of science fiction with the fun, lightheartedness of Saturday night television. He couldn’t think of anything else quite like it.

It sounds strange, but it actually works incredibly well. When you’re part of the show, all you can really do is try to have fun, because there’s truly nothing else like it – each episode is totally unique.

Being a companion often means quietly observing and simply saying ‘Doctor,’ which is perfectly okay. But when you do get involved, it’s going to be incredibly rewarding, difficult, and important work, so you need to treat it with the same dedication and seriousness as any professional job.

It’s truly a lot of fun, and my biggest piece of advice is to simply enjoy your work. It’s easy for actors to focus on the challenges, but ultimately, this job is a real privilege.

Arthur Darvill’s full interview will be published later this month.
